[edit] Welcome

Hello, Stux, this is my official welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~) this will automatically produce your name and the date. [edit] Re:Mayaguez

First, thank you for adding the space between Puerto Ricans and Mexicans in my User Page. Feel free to make any changes that you believe the Mayaguez article may need. While I was researching for my article Sports in Puerto Rico, I discovered that it was impossible for the first game of baseball to be played in Mayaguez. It was played in San Juan according to the newspapers of the day. If I can be of any help in the future, you're more then welcomed to drop me a line. Your friend in Wiki, Tony the Marine 17:59, 11 October 2005 (UTC)

  • Thank you for the update. Hey, tell me somethings about yourself. Were you born in Puerto Rico? If not, how did you become interested in the subject. How did you find out about Wiki? I think that it is great that people such as yourself are making positive contributions and are sharing thier knowledge in this project. Your friend Tony the Marine 14:47, 4 November 2005 (UTC)
Sorry for the late reply. First, thank you for the kind and encouraging words! It is good to know that your work is being appreciated. I could not have run into a better admin. Anyway, to answer your questions: I was born and raised in Puerto Rico (in Mayaguez, and later moved to Cabo Rojo - hence the reason I chose to proofread the articles I did). I moved to Michigan at 18 to do my undegrad at Alma College, and I currently still live in Michigan pursuing my graduate studies at Michigan State. I got hooked to wiki-ing a few months ago through the Homestar Runner Wiki. Given that I was addicted to Homestarrunner.com, I needed a venue to express that addiction ;). Eventually I began contributing more on this wiki. Hopefully I will find time to work on more of the articles related to the municipalities later on. For now I should cut down on wiki-ing a little bit :). --Stux 06:07, 7 November 2005 (UTC)

Hi, I uploaded an image of Ari Meyers within the the accordance established by Wikipedia (source and licence) and someone put it up for deletion because "it is unencyclopedic". Hey Tony! I hate how people abuse the system to make things yucky for the rest of us. I'll see what I can do! However they do have a point about the Copyright status. But them being gun-ho about it isn't gonna help things. --Stux 22:51, 26 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] HRWiki

I don't want to make a big deal out of it, but can you please explain how that was POV? Yeltensic42.618 don't panic 17:44, 30 January 2006 (UTC)

Sorry for the late reply. The reason I regarded the edit as POV, is, although the first couple of sentences are mostly true (as far as I know account creation has not been locked, and it is possible only your IP ranges were blocked from account creation), the rest of the account is only one side of the story given by a partial observer and contains biased language (e.g. "sysop foes"). Also, compared to NSMC the incident, for example, the impact of the events of this incident are not as serious, which was another reason I reverted the edit (a reason I did not mention in the summary). Thank you for inquiring about this edit and not starting some form of revert war. --Stux 16:38, 31 January 2006 (UTC)
That's fine, it wasn't very late. According to BazookaJoe, account creation was locked for everyone. I tried to include both sides, perhaps we could add it back but clean it up a bit? I see also that NSMC and Willy on Wheels aren't mentioned, but if I'm added back they definitely should be in there too. Yeltensic42.618 don't panic 17:29, 31 January 2006 (UTC)
Actually NSMC is "NIGGA STOLE MY COW!!" which is indeed mentioned in the article. You're right in saying that Wow is not, however I do not remember when the attack happened and how extensive the damage was (I know we had a few puppets one time but it wasn't as effective as NSMC). And like I mentioned before, I do not think the incident surrounding your actions to be as serious and significant as other debilitating encounters the wiki has had (as you can see the history introduction is very brief). --Stux 20:13, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Did You Know, Puerto Rico?

Hey Amigo, I was thinking of adding a Did You Know? section to the article Puerto Rico. In that section we could post little known interesting facts about our island and our people. It would be serve as an educational tool that would motivate others to read about our island. An example of what I plan is this:

Did You Know?

  1. That the first shot fired by the United States in World Wae I was in Puerto Rico and not in Europe? It was fired by Lt. Teofilo Marxuach.
  1. That the first opera in history to be recorded was recorded by tenor Antonio Paoli?
  1. That Puerto Rico once had a President? His name was Francisco Ramirez Medina.

I want to consult with you and my other Boricua Panas. I would like to receive any input. Tu Amigo Tony the Marine 19:51, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks

Mi Hermano, you know that you are one of my main guys here. You know what really bothers me sometimes? When people who have absolutely no knowledge of Puerto Rico or it's people start to edit those articles. For example, the Military history of Puerto Rico was voted a feature article and it even appeared in the Main Page. Then a year later you get some dumbnut that comes with something like this:

== Featured Article? ==

The article is sadly not one of the best Featured articles out there, and a prime subject for WP:FARC. I'm going to try to improve this article out some in the next few days. Something that could be done is by expanding the lead as it is currently too short. Also needs a copyedit. Thanks --Jaranda wat's sup 06:40, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Did You Know - Puerto Rico

We avoid cross namespace redirects unless they are essential, but particularly those that leave article space. This is partly because it makes life much harder for our mirrors who suddenly have to filter out all of them and partly because there is usually a good reason why the page (or article) has been removed from the namespace in which it appeared. In this case, Special:Whatlinkshere/Did You Know - Puerto Rico indicates that nothing in article space, nor outside of AfD and a userpage still links to it. So we don't need the redirect. -Splashtalk 01:58, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Category vandalism and Alaibot

As I said to Stemonitis, it's an interesting idea, but waaaay beyond anything the bot currently does. The idea of a different tag with a caveat is possibly somewhat more tractible, but an earlier exercise in separate treatment of "previously categorised articles" as a list doesn't seem to have attracted much sustained effort in processing it, so I'm a little skeptical as to whether it'd repay the effort that'd be involved. You could try asking the operators of the various anti-vandal bots -- which unlike mine, are already examining every edit on a revision-by-revision basis if it'd be feasible for them to take "category vandalism" more explicitly into account, though I'm not personally sure how one would distinguish between legitimate and vandalistic category removal. Or, join the cheerleading for the "mandatory categorisation enforced in the Mediawiki software" proposal, which would solve this phenomenon at a stroke. Alai 01:58, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

I don't assume that other bots will catch the vandalism: quite clearly they don't always, or we wouldn't be having this discussion. My point is that by examining each edit as it happens, they're in a better position to do so than mine is, and to be modified to consider this case explicitly if they're not already. And they will certainly do it (or "decide" not to) before mine does, because they're doing it "live" (or near-live), while Alaibot is only given the candidate articles to run on hours, days, or weeks after they're created (depending on source of the list, and where the article happens to fall in that 'cycle'), so it's already "old vandalism" at that point: it's not being "intercepted" from being handled by some other bot, or indeed RC-patroller, they've already missed it. (If there are any "slow" anti-vandalism bots that look at old edits that wouldn't be case, but I don't know of any that work that way.) By "written message", I assumed you meant a different template on previously-categorised articles than new/always-uncategorised articles; or did you mean to add this to {{uncat}}, or to its category? The latter I'd have no objection to, the former see my comment above on. I imagine that eventually some sort of "stable version" system or something similar will eventually get implemented, but I wouldn't hold my breath about it happening soon: it'll probably have to go from being a good idea that's under consideration to something there's perceived to be a critical need for, after some (further) series of disasters. And I don't mind your digression, I'm fairly prone to them myself. :) Alai 00:03, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

A vandal had added nonsense and I didn't check the history before I deleted. It is now restored. -- John Reaves 04:19, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Speedy deletion of Template:):

Hi Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry. While I appreciate that you are keeping an eye out for vandalism and useless pages, I would like to point out that the smiley template {{):}} that you tagged for speedy deletion was created in good faith and for a useful purpose to wikipedia. The page was in fact, in the middle of a TfD discussion that was interrupted. That is was tagged as a "test page" and "patent nonsense" I consider a careless evaluation on your part. The template itself had a TfD template notice and accompanying discussion detailing its use. Moreover, my edit history reflects that I do not do edits carelessly nor for test purposes. I would just like to ask that for future edit actions you take greater care in assessing the pages you tag, as tools like Twinkle, for example, makes it really easy to automatically tag what could be good edits and pages as bad. I have also noticed that I am not the first to bring similar issues to your attention. Thank you for your time. --Stux 03:58, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

First of all, I'll try to ignore your tone. You are obviously upset that "your" template was deleted. When I tagged the article for deletion, it didn't have any tags on it. The content was exactly as shown in the deletion log. I'll transcribe that for you below, just in case you can't access it:

04:02, 16 October 2007 John Reaves (Talk | contribs) deleted "Template:):" ‎ (content was: '{{db-nonsense}}Texas.<nowiki>== Spencer Smith == Spencer Smith is an American gangsta and professional playa. He was born May 7, 1991 (age 16) in Pl...')

I have no interest in the template as it was before, but I'd ask that in future you don't jump to conclusions about who edits carelessly. Perhaps you should check the deletion log in future before jumping to conclusions. Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry 04:08, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
Oh! I see. That was not the original content of the page. I'm sorry that I had not noticed up to now that it seems the page had been vandalized (update: and several times after looking at the page history now that the template has been restored). The template had a smiley image (along with other wiki code) used so that the smiley image could be easily inserted in the talk page. The usefulness of this is what was discussed at the TfD. The fact that I am upset does not stem as much from it being a template I created, but that better research before taking action would have saved a lot of trouble. I am trying to keep my tone civil and cordial while carefully expressing my opinion. If I have sounded condescending I apologize, but I am trying to be clear in my point in hopes of preventing future disagreements. --Stux 04:39, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
Not a problem! Sorry if I sounded condescending too - I have (as you can see by my edits to your template) a "personal policy" of coming down on everything, hard. The good stuff, the stuff people care about, usually remains standing. Deletionism at its best. Stay safe, good luck with your TfD - I won't participate for obvious reasons, but good luck all the same! Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry 04:43, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] And on that note...

The Resilient Barnstar
Thanks for replying to my terse message with a smile! Any more of that and the community may well end up being a whole lot nicer. Well done, and again - thankyou! Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry 04:54, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Wow

I'm sorry if I caused all this chaos. My TfD nomination probably brought the vandal's attention to the poor little template in the first place. I'm really sorry, Stux. I didn't think this would turn into what it has. I wouldn't have nominated it in the first place; there was no reason to put you though this. But hey, at least you got a barnstar out of it! :)

On a more positive note, I notice in your collection of smiley templates, the winking one was facing the opposite way of the others. I know you can't have them all face the usual way because of technical reasons, but I would make 'em all consistent, so it's easier to remember. Just a suggestion. (Don't worry, I won't put these up for deletion, I've learned my lesson). Rocket000 15:03, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
