In 2001, the population was 5,357.[3]

In 2006, Stettler County No. 6 had a population of 5,216 living in 1,846 dwellings, a 2.6% decrease from 2001. The county has a land area of 4,008.72 km² (1,547.8 sq mi) and a population density of 1.3/km² (3.4/sq mi).[2]

Although Stettler is commonly mentioned as the county seat, it is a separate municipality with its own council and mayor elected by citizens of the town. The County of Stettler is governed by a council elected by county residents, and the reeve is elected from amongst the counsellors. While the reeve of the county may also fill the role of a counsellor, the mayor of the town may not.
