Spencer Douglass (April 29, 1975 - June 12, 2008) was born in Belfast, Ireland and is a food writer and restaurant critic based in Hong Kong and Macau.

[edit] Biography
Spencer moved to Hong Kong in 1977 at age 2 with his parents and completed schooling there, attending Quarry Bay School, South Island School and French International School - Hong Kong. After that he attended university at University College London studying his BA in Modern European Studies from 1993 – 1998, with one year at Leiden University studying International Law in the Netherlands from 1996 – 1997.

Spencer currently writes monthly food reviews for Macau Business magazine and is working on a book on Eating in Macau. He has also written reviews for the soon to be released X Travel Hong Kong book in his own name and for local magazines under pseudonyms.
[edit] Spencer and Racism in the HK Education System
In 2003 he sparked off a long running debate on racism in the education system in Hong Kong after he exposed a school for refusing to hire a teacher owing to his ethnic background. The interview with him was published in the South China Morning Post that year with his name cited as “Agent D” and provoked a series of articles that continued for several months which in turn caused a debate in the HK lawmaking body LegCo that still has not been fully resolved. Although he refused to do further newspaper interviews, he was active in pursuing the issue with both the Education and Manpower Bureau and the Home Affairs Department.

During his final year at UCL Spencer took on a summer job at the Schafer House halls of residence and ended up working as a cleaner with Chris Martin and Jonny Buckland of Coldplay fame. Together they made beds, vacuumed corridors and cleaned toilets for several months and they remained friends till Spencer left England. Although Coldplay performed in various locations over that year and entered several competitions, they were not signed. Some 8 years later, Spencer surprised Chris and Jonny at a press conference in the The Landmark Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Hong Kong. Posing as a reporter from SCMP, upon recognizing him, Chris announced that he had a been a cleaner with him and two lesbians at university.

In 2006, the organizer of the Rockit Hong Kong Music Festival outdoor music festivals and independent filmmaker in HK, Nimal Jayawardena after watching the Coldplay press conference, decided to name his band after Spencer Douglass. However, as he explained to him later, owing to the necessity of having symmetry of the two names in their marketing flyers, T-shirts and other promotions, one s had to be removed, hence Spencer Douglas. The slogan of the band is “Do You Know Spencer Douglas?” and they were widely hailed by MTV DJ Dominic Lau and local personality Raven as well as Ian Brown ex-frontman of The Stone Roses at the 2006 Rockit festival.
[edit] Spencer Douglass and Indian Comics
Since early 2007, Spencer Douglass has been at the forefront of a series of new comic and graphic titles based on Indian mythology which are to be released on January 2008 in India and worldwide in April 2008. He works with some the best talent in Asia including fluid design + marketing and it's founders Ms Helen Griffiths and Mr. Simon Squibb, also the founders of fluid friction comics.
[edit] Spencer Douglass' Death
Spencer Douglass died on thursday, 12th of June in Mumbai, India. His untimely death occurred moments after a catastrophic car crash, in central Mumbai, during the early hours of the morning. Travelling with his lifelong friend Benicio De Bondo. Their vehicle [De Bondo at the wheel] was hit by a large minibus - the driver of the minibus was killed on impact. De Bondo was trapped by his steering wheel, remaining conscious throughout he regales a story of how Spencer Douglass tore the wheel away, and carried him to safety. Spencer Douglass then staggered to the wrecked minibus in a bid to save the driver. As he clumsily clambered into the belly of the wrecked vehicle a sudden explosion killed him. De Bondo was picked up by indian police later, his testimony was confirmed hours later after the fires died down. Spencer Douglass often spoke about a fear of dying on 'friday the 13th' how ironic that his demise saved him from that fate by a matter of hours.
