Simon Birmingham

Simon John Birmingham (born 14 July 1974 in Adelaide, South Australia), Australian politician and Senator for South Australia. He was nominated by the Liberal Party to fill the Senate seat left vacant following the death of Senator Jeannie Ferris in April 2007 and was subsequently appointed to the Senate on 3 May 2007. At the age of 34, he is the youngest member of the Australian Senate.^[1]

He had previously run as the Liberal candidate for the Australian House of Representatives seat of Hindmarsh held by the Liberals in the 2004 federal election, but lost to the ALP's Steve Georganas. Birmingham had been preselected to contest Senator Ferris's seat at the next general election (she had announced her retirement), but then entered the Senate earlier due to her unexpected death.
