Christopher Vaughan Evans (born 14 May 1958), is an Australian politician and a member of the Australian Senate for the state of Western Australia, representing the Australian Labor Party. He has been Minister for Immigration and Citizenship in the Rudd Labor Government since 3 December 2007.
Evans was born in Cuckfield, United Kingdom. He was educated at the University of Western Australia, where he graduated in Arts. Evans was an industrial officer with the Federated Miscellaneous Workers' Union in 1982-1987 and State Secretary of the Fire Brigade Union of Western Australia in 1987-1990. He was Western Australian State Secretary of the Labor Party in 1991-1993, after which He was elected to the Senate.
Evans was an Opposition Whip in the Senate in 1996-1998. He has been a member of the Opposition Shadow Ministry since then. He was Shadow Minister for Family Services and the Aged in 1998-2001, for Defence in 2001-2004, for Reconciliation, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs in 2003, for Defence Procurement, Science and Personnel in 2004 and for Social Security in 2004-2005. He was the leader of the opposition in the Senate from October 2004 until November 2007.
In June 2005, he was appointed Shadow Minister for Indigenous Affairs and for Family and Community Services.
In November 2007 Evans was named as the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship in the incoming Rudd Labor Government.[1]
Evans will be acting Prime Minister of Australia for around 30 hours in June 2008, the first Labor senator to be acting prime minister for nearly 100 years.[2]
