[edit] Construction status
As of May 2008, the site has been prepared for construction, and building is to start later this year.[4][5]
Planning models for the Lujiazui financial district dating back to 1993 show plans for three supertall skyscrapers all next to each other.[6] Two have already been built; the Jin Mao Building was completed in 1998 and the Shanghai World Financial Center is very close to completion in 2008.
The current block assigned for the Shanghai Center, Z3-2, was for a short time a golf course, before the site was cleared for preparation.[7]
The building was originally meant to be completed by 2010, in time for the 2010 World Expo, but an official has said that it now can't be done.[7]
[edit] Design
After numerous designs were submitted by many architectral firms, two design proposals have reached the final. Both are 580 m tall.[7]
Foster & Partners's design, termed "Spire", is a three-sided tower that tapers towards the top and features stylised external bracing.
Gensler's design, termed "Dragon", twists as it rises and features a transparent façade.
