Serbia debuted (and won) in 2007 at the 52nd Eurovision Song Contest. Previously it participated as part of Yugoslavia (1961-1991), Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (1992) and Serbia and Montenegro (2004-2006).
Serbian debut entry, the ballad "Molitva" by Marija Šerifović, won the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 with a score of 268 points. Thanks to this, they were the host of the 2008 edition in Belgrade.
The second Serbian entry, performed in Belgrade was written by past entrant Željko Joksimović. The song Oro, an ethnic ballad, performed by Jelena Tomašević came 6th and received 160 points in the overall rankings.

Since the dissolution of Serbia and Montenegro, Serbia has taken part in the Eurovision Song Contest. The country made its solo debut in the 2007 contest, which their representative won.
In 2004 and 2005 Serbia entered the song contest in the loose State Union of Serbia and Montenegro. Their first entrant Željko Joksimović, who was from Serbia reached 2nd position, in 2006 the country had to withdraw because the two member states couldn't agree which candidate to send.

Serbian singers Ljiljana Petrović and Lola Novaković represented federal Slovenia at Yugoslav national elections for Eurovision Song Contest in 1961 and 1962. They sang in Serbo-Croatian language. "Neke davne zvezde" was written by Serbian author Miroslav Antić and composed by Slovenian musician Jože Privšek who also made a music for "Ne pali svetlo u sumrak". [1]
