[edit] Biography
Malone has played as a session member for groups ranging from Brazilian jazz to English pop. He was the bassist for Florida technical metal unit Cynic during their Focus period. Malone has continued as a studio bassist since leaving the band, performing on over fifty records to date. He has also authored three books, "Music Theory for Bassists," "Dictionary Of Bass Grooves," and "A Portrait of Jaco: The Solos Collection" (a book of transcriptions of Jaco Pastorius bass solos) for the Hal Leonard Corporation. In the academic field, Malone has had papers on theory and music cognition published and given presentations at conferences such as the Society for Music Theory and The Glenn Gould Conference, and is teacher as well as finishing his Doctoral studies in Music Theory at Florida State University. He now teaches music theory at the University of Central Missouri.
He also assembled and recorded the self-titled Gordian Knot debut, Gordian Knot, released in 1998. The album has contributions from Sean Reinert (Cynic), Trey Gunn (King Crimson), Ron Jarzombek (Watchtower, Spastic Ink) and John Myung (Dream Theater). A second Gordian Knot album, Emergent, had appearances from Bill Bruford (Yes, King Crimson) and Steve Hackett (Genesis, GTR).
He re-joined Cynic with founding members Sean Reinert and Paul Masvidal in May 2008 and is currently recording Cynic's second studio album.
