[edit] Notability

Yea, so what's he done that's worth an encylopedia entry? The current text is worthless. RedWolf 04:20, Apr 14, 2004 (UTC)

Now borderline notable, but sources are potentially biased (several from subject's personal website, and another appears to be an autobiography listed on employer's site). --Alan Au 16:41, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Article deletion

This article has been proposed for speedy deletion, claiming:

Only cited assertions of notability link to subject's own website.

but this seems to ignore at least the retrospective at Tides of Men (an independent history website).

Anyway, i think Roedy Green is notable at least because he:

  • was a prominent figure in the Canadian gay liberation movement; helped form the Gay Alliance Toward Equality, served as its second chairman, and authored the influential "A Guide For The Naive Homosexual"
  • authored the fairly widely cited Java & Internet Glossary, and "How to Write Unmaintainable Code" essay, among others
  • created the Abundance programming language

The article is still a bit of a stub, but this should be grounds for improvement, not deletion. --Piet Delport 10:31, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Recent Vandalism

The people who have been vandalising this page recently are too scared to reveal their (user)names.

Roedy Green on the other hand has been man enough to admit to the world that he is gay and has HIV. He also brings discussions on awkward subjects to the fore, be that subject the war in Iraq, or the exact behaviour of a JDBC driver- surprisingly many people are reluctant to constructively discuss either.

Personally, I live a very different, much more conformist life to Roedy, and I do not agree with everything that he has to say, yet I am in awe of his frankness, productivity, humanity, and clarity of thought.

I encourage all users to voice their opinions on this matter, but please: be brave enough to log in first.

The vandalism wave was almost certainly the result of Lowell Green's inciting the listeners of his radio talk show to harass Roedy (after announcing his home address and telephone number, no less!). See Roedy's account of the events. --Piet Delport 23:15, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

Roedy Green posted the following message on December 19, 2006 (anyone doubting the authenticity of this posting is invited to google it themselves): http://groups.google.com/group/alt.politics.bush/msg/0b02207dc3c79ac2 --M.Wakefield 64.230.86.3 02:22, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

The above informaiton should not be taken as fact. Roedy Green disputes it and states "I wrote no such letter" Roedy's account of the events. Cynrin 02:38, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

Yeah. And Roedy says the posting can't be found by Google either. Try this string: can.politics roedy green "letter to sergeant darcy tedford". It's message 1 of 110, and Roedy contributed at least 20 postings to the thread. --M. Wakefield 64.230.86.3 03:01, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

I'm removing that content, per WP:V and WP:BLP. Usenet by itself is not a reliable source, particularly when the alleged author of the post denies posting it. If there is coverage in a third-party reliable source, it can probably go back in. -SpuriousQ (talk) 20:57, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

I have replaced the section on Mr. Green's notoriety surrounding the Makah whaling issue: during the time of the hunt, Mr. Green was an active public voice on the matter, and published his opinions on the matter on his website. This is a legitimate and appropriate addition to his wikipedia entry, hard to imagine why anyone would delete it. Look it up yourself: stop censoring the facts. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.51.132.240 (talk) 20:16, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
