Lowell Green

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lowell Green (born 7 July 1936)[1] is a Canadian radio personality. He hosts a conservative morning talk show on Ottawa radio station CFRA, and has also syndicated programming to several other Canadian radio stations.

Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, United States, to Canadian parents, and immigrated to Canada. He lived with his grandparents for much of his youth.

Green graduated from Macdonald Agricultural College near Montreal in 1956. He started his radio career in Brantford, Ontario, subsequently moving to stations in Sudbury and Montreal. In Montreal, Green won awards for his coverage of the Springhill mining disaster in Nova Scotia.[2]

Green arrived at CFRA in 1960 as a news and farm reporter. In 1966, he began hosting Greenline, and eventually became the longest-running open line talk show host in North America. He retired briefly from radio in the 1980s, but returned in 1990.

In 1984, Green ran for the Ontario Liberal Party in a provincial by-election (December 13) in Ottawa Centre. He came third, behind the Ontario New Democratic Party and the Progressive Conservative candidates, with 26.6% of all votes cast.

In 1993, Green returned to CFRA, and has hosted The Lowell Green Show ever since.

[edit] Controversy and criticism

  • Green considers "global warming to be a scam." (as stated on CFRA, June 5, 2007).
  • Callers have repeatedly criticized Green for advertising a certain brand of tomatoes as being pesticide-free while Lowell continues to fight against a pesticide free bylaw for the City of Ottawa.[citation needed]
  • Green speaks against Waste Management, Inc for their push to triple the size of the Carp Landfill, which site within the city of Ottawa. He is a supporter of high efficiency incineration and plasma gasification.[citation needed]
  • In early 2007, CHUM Limited, which at the time owned CFRA where Green works, applied to send him to France for the 90th Anniversary ceremonies of the Battle of Vimy Ridge and the re-opening of the Vimy Ridge Memorial. John Baird, Conservative Member of Parliament, called into Green's program on Thursday April 5, 2007 announcing that the Government of Canada had made arrangements for Green to travel and stay in France for the ceremony. Baird specifically commented that it was appropriate to send Lowell in recognition for his being a friend and supporter of the Conservative run Government, and the Conservative Party, over the years.{as stated on air: "The Lowell Green Show" CFRA April 5, 2007} Several other journalists also attended.[4] While being briefly criticized by some for taking a "freebie" from the government after speaking out against doing such things for years, Green announced that the CHUM was paying the Canadian Government the equivalent of a round trip ticket in coach to France, as well as paying for Lowell's lodging and meals, thus not costing the tax payers anything.[citation needed]
