[edit] "Happyjoe"

I think it should be considered whether Happyjoe (talk · contribs) might be Rex071404 (talk · contribs). I wouldn't ordinarily suggest such a thing, but there's three things that make me suspect it:

  • Rex's old signature, as seen here, includes a little doodle-face whose image file is "Happyjoe.jpg";
  • Happyjoe picked me (as well as many others) to complain to about his account being "unjustly blocked" over a "misunderstanding". I'm not an administrator; why would he have picked me, a party so far uninvolved in anything involving him, and ask me to do something I can't do? The theory "because he knows who I am from run-ins under another name, thinks I'm an administrator, and thinks he'll be putting one over on me if he gets me to unblock this account" seems rather plausible to me.
  • Frankly, a look at Happyjoe's style in this RFC, including describing a block due to a user-conduct RFC as a "mistake" that should be "fixed", reminds me a great deal of Rex.

There's nothing there that's proof, only things that are suggestive; however, I offer it as a possibility to be considered. -- Antaeus Feldspar 15:55, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

Along the same lines, these two edit summaries [1] [2] by Happpyjoe sockpuppets are "signed" Rx. — ApolloCreed (comment) (talk) 20:53, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Unblocking my account

I am still having trouble logging in to my account. I have made a formal public apology and renounced my former ways. What more do I have to do to have my Happyjoe account unblocked? I really believe that I should have another chance. I would just create a new account but I am afraid that I would unjustly be marked with the sockpuppet label if I did that. Please help! Happyjoe

Really? stop using open proxies and editing the article then. pschemp | talk 17:54, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
The only reason for using open proxies is because my account has been unjustly blocked. I am obviously not trying to use the open proxies to hide or conceal my identity in any way as I am adding the name Happyjoe to my edits (which I might add starts a new round of unjustified IP blocking). Look, I just want to be a responsible member of the Wikipedia community, but I am thwarted at every turn. I am sure that you are probably a nice and reasonable person. I believe that I have been labeled by one or two people and once the label is applied EVERYONE on Wikipedia assumes that the label is in fact true and then there is no way to have the label removed once applied. I have been trying to resolve this mistake for quite some time now and have contacted countless individuals on Wikipedia to ask for their assistance. However as soon as I ask for their assistance they assume that the previous labels applied are true and as well.
In addition, I am also interested in becoming an Admin on Wikipedia and would very much like your support in this. But obviously I must first have my account unblocked before I can become an Admin. I offer my sincere thanks and deep gratitude for your assistance and support.
Happyjoe using 201.0.51.210 18:12, 27 February 2006 (UTC) because that is currently the only alternative.
Good luck on becoming an admin, Joe. I don't think you will make it until you have distanced yourself from this little fiasco. Make good contributions and over time, this won't matter much. When you think you are ready, read this. — ApolloCreed (comment) (talk) 19:25, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
That is far from the only alternative. Register another account, stop editing the Big Spring article and behave as a member of this community and you will be fine. Keep disrupting and I have no sympathy for you. pschemp | talk 20:41, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

I made a Good Faith Effort to reform, but instead was thwarted at every turn by those who lacked the capacity for understanding and forgiveness. I really expected that someone would have been willing to unblock my account and give me just one more chance... but oh no... instead all of my pleas for mercy were met with hateful diatribes. I am of course very much interested in becoming a Wikipedia Admin and would appreciate your support in my efforts to achieve this goal. Sincerely, Happyjoe 69.145.215.206 19:31, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

If you think you've been the subject of "hateful diatribes," you must be new to the internet, because you haven't. You keep vandalizing pages and using anonymous networks as sockpuppets. It's ridiculous. START A BLOG. If you're going to stay here, you might as well create a new account and start over. The anonymous network you're using doesn't disguise you when you keep inserting the exact same content in the Big Spring article. That's a dead giveaway that it's you. — ApolloCreed (comment) (talk) 01:43, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Women Archaeologists

Hello, as you created a category for women archaeologists, I thought you might be interested in Joan Du Plat Taylor. I'm not convinced she merits a whole article to herself (there is little about her in public domain that seems readily accessible), but I thought as founder editor of an international journal she merited a mention, so I've just included her as a section. But that creates a problem for me, because it doesn't seem right to categorise the whole page as being about women archaeologists! On the other hand, the lone woman currently categorised looked a bit lonely. Any suggestions? Viv Hamilton 23:36, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] U.S. to United States

Please stop changing the headers for military units from U.S. to United States. The articles were all in the same format; now some are and some aren't. Nobunaga24 00:27, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

I see nothing in the MOS that says you can't use an abbreviation. Maybe you could point the way. The point I'm making is that the WikiProject Military history has discussed this and the general consensus has been to use U.S. Maybe you could discuss it there. I think many people might get a little irritated because I know they have had this discussion internally before. Then again, wikipedia is the land of "fortune favors the bold..." Nobunaga24 00:50, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

I'm washing my hands of it...honestly, it doesn't make a whole lot of difference to me. Just as long as it's consistent - i.e. all divisions, regiments, armies, corps, brigades, seperate battalions, etc. get changed. You might want to click on the category link at the bottom for the unit type - it will take you to a list of all divisions, etc, then you can find the pages without having to use the search function. Nobunaga24 01:06, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

I dont really have time right now to sort thru the archives but I did find this Wikipedia:Naming conventions (acronyms) - "As disambiguators, well-known acronyms such as "US" or "UK" are encouraged, to minimize typing. So, the preferred usage is Great Northern Railway (US)." But like I said, makes little difference to me, just as long as there is consistent use. Gotta get to my job now... [edit] Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Die my darling

I encourage you to revisit this discussion as it does not appear to have anything to do with Joe Byrd (Cherokee Chief) and your comment may have been made in confusion due to a malformed AFD discussion placed below this one in the Feb. 22 AFD log. — Mar. 3, '06 [07:27] <freakofnurxture|talk>

I changed to: *Keep. Because I was obviously smoking crack the first time I voted? Hmm. I have no idea why I said that. Must have mixed up my Afd, but even more curious, why did someone agree with me? Oh well. Thanks for the heads up FON. pschemp | talk 09:55, 3 March 2006 (UTC)
Seriously sorry there, I don't even remember that one...weird. pschemp | talk 09:57, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

The reason for this (I'm sure) is that Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Chief_Joe_Byrd was right directly below it (see old revision) and it appeared to instead be the final comment in the one you edited. — Mar. 3, '06 [11:59] <freakofnurxture|talk>

[edit] Afd: Armenian Genocide and position of Turkey

Perhaps you could remove the Afd tag from page Armenian Genocide and position of Turkey, since you appear to have withdrawn the proposal. Lambiam 18:49, 4 March 2006 (UTC)

sorry. hadn't got to that yet. pschemp | talk 18:51, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
Hi, I don't think it's proper procedure to just blank the AfD page in order to "remove" an AfD. You'll have to wait till an admin actually closes it. But since you've retracted the AfD and nobody else voted a clear "delete", I suppose that will happen soon. For now, I've restored the contents of the AfD page for greater clarity. Lukas (T.|@) 21:18, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
I just decided the debate would do more harm than good. I wasn't trying to hide anything. Its all fixed with strikeouts now. pschemp | talk 00:08, 5 March 2006 (UTC)
Actually, while such an article should have existed, dumping the materials from an article in a new one is just not the best wiki thing to do. Regardless, I think those articles created by the same user, Timeline_of_Armenian_Genocide are more obvious AfD, not only they are mostly copyvios, but creating tens of different articles on the timeline is clearly and certainly a thing that should not be encouraged here. [edit] U.S. Virgin Islands

I noticed that you have moved many U.S. Virgin Islands–related articles to use "United States" rather than "U.S." in their titles. On talk:United States Virgin Islands a group of us had reached a consensus that, in general, "U.S. Virgin Islands" should be used for all article names other than the United States Virgin Islands article, since "United States Virgin Islands" is unnecessarily long for the titles of all of these articles. Could you please stop moving these articles in the mean time and explain why you are moving them to use "United States" rather than "U.S."? Thanks. //MrD9 23:24, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

Nono, it is him, checkuser means nothing, an open proxy check would, as I am convinced that if both Coolcat and Karabekir don't trace from the same location, most certainly one or both uses an open proxy, I am also convinced to know under which alias Coolcat contribute in Turkish Wikipedia. you missed where the vandal vandalized her picture and made it so not nice I had an admin delete it immediatley. Dakota's revert didn't catch it. I'm happy to announce you the creation of WikiProject Indigenous peoples of North America, an attempt to build a comprehensive guide to Native American and First Nations resources on Wikipedia and promoting development of related articles. If you would like to participate, you can visit the project page, where you can join the project and/or contribute to the discussion. I hope to see you there! [edit] Church Links

No worries mate - Haven't uploaded anything yet and I'll be sure to correct my part of it first. Celcius (Talk) Wiki be With us! 07:28, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

  • whew* I can sleep now. :) pschemp | talk 07:29, 11 February 2006 (UTC)
BTW - You might want to wait disambiguing the rest of them as all the state articles will be replaced by new individual county-specific articles. No need to correct links in state articles (i.e.. Like this one) which will be deleted anyway when the new ones (i.e.. Like this one) are put up. Celcius (Talk) Wiki be With us! 07:36, 11 February 2006 (UTC)
I assumed you guys were just splitting up the existing state articles by county....how will that delete existing links, I mean if you just take the info from the state articles and copy out into split by county articles, doesn't that preserve the same info that is in the state ones Or am I just completely off base? pschemp | talk 07:39, 11 February 2006 (UTC)
That other dude I'm helping is the one who started this whole thing. Apparently he first copied the state files but that turned out to be too bulky - so he wrote a perl script which searched the NRHP database and compiled new txt files formatted for Wikipedia. It's easier to use them because they are preformatted, catagorized and internally linked as they should be. They need to be looked over though - to get rid of problems like the church links, spell-errors and other evils. Celcius (Talk) Wiki be With us! 07:47, 11 February 2006 (UTC)
Ok gotcha. The main disambig pages are created anyway, so I'll just wait until you do your thing. Thanks!pschemp | talk 07:49, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

I made everything a link supposing that some might have articles eventually. Since they were accepted as historic, I believe they are at least marginally notable, so some of the redlinks might eventually be blue. A huge pile of redlinks doesn't hurt, does it? --SFoskett 18:44, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

It does when it made generic stuff like First Presbyterian Church almost the most requested article on WIkipedia. Its more the way the links were parsed that bothers me. First Presbyterian Church (its not even the name of a denomination!) should never be linked to, the link should always be something like First Presbyterian Church, Hollywood, California. Really, I guess I don't mind some of the more specific links, but I know a ton of those places are historic because they were the first church, barn, house, whatever buit in XX county, and as such will never be notable enough for an entire article of their own. (Although they may get a mention in a hisory of some place article). Additionaly, the huge red lists are hard to read IMHO. That said, its not my preference, but I can deal as long as the generic linking issue is taken care of. pschemp | talk 18:56, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Categories in the Native American project

I don't know what is going on. The edit history does not match what I though I was doing. I know that I moved cats on Blackfoot culture, Cherokee culture and mythology, Iroquois and Iroguois mythology and Ojibwa language from the top section to Tribes section. I am quite sure that I did not move the archeology cats, although that is what the history says. Sorry, I don't know what is happening. -- Dalbury(Talk) 03:21, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

This is probably edit conflicts which for some reason aren't shown when you save. It happens when two people edit the same thing quickly and has happened to me too. Don't worry about it. pschemp | talk 03:24, 12 February 2006 (UTC)
I'm finding some categories that haven't been included, so I'll be trying to add those. -- Dalbury(Talk) 03:26, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Another Esperanzial note...

Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".

The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.

Yours, as ever, Esperanzially,

Hi there,

This concerns Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mike Daisey, where you recently voiced an opinion. User:Calton has raised some significant objections, and I would like to ask if you wouldn't mind considering the ensuing discussion and changing or confirming your choice with respect to the article Mike Daisey. Sincerely ENCEPHALON 07:06, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks

Thanks for taking the time to vote in my RfA, which passed with a final vote of 54/2/1 despite my obvious inadequacy for the job. I'll do my level best to use the mop and bucket — or, as I said in my RfA, plunger — responsibly. Of course, in the best tradition of politicans everywhere, I've already broken a campaign promise (I blocked a vandal last night despite having said "I don't anticipate using the blocking tool very often"). Nevertheless, I'll try not to let the unbridled power corrupt me. —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 19:22, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi Pschemp/Archive 2. On behalf of my right eye, I'd like to thank you for giving me your support on my recent RfA. Nope. That image was already there. It had already been placed before I even looked at that page. I had nothing to do with it. The only thing I did do was upload Fortpointcanons02-012006.JPG and Fortpoint02-01-2006.JPG. That was the only change I made to the page.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Miskatonic (talkcontribs)

[edit] Image:Dichroicclose.jpg

No mistake. Anybody can slap a GFDL-self tag on an image (and they often do). They think because they scanned an image or copied it from a website that they "created" it, which they did not. You need to provide supporting documentation to claim GFDL-self and the more the better. See Image:Olivia newtonjohn 1988b.jpg for a recommended example. If you did not create this image and hold the copyright, then you cannot claim GFDL-self. I put the tag back on until it is properly sourced. -Thanks Nv8200p talk 15:59, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Recipes

Regarding my edit to Turkish Delight I took at face value the text of the tag which reads : "If the page can be edited into an encyclopedic article, rather than simply a recipe, please do so and remove this message." Since the page was indeed an encyclopedic article, rather than simply a recipe, the tag was obviously no longer necessary. Perhaps the text of the tag should be changed to something more like "Recipes are not appropriate in encyclopedic articles" so that others are not confused in the future. Avjewe 14:39, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

The tag can't go until the recipie is copied over. Sorry if it was confusing. pschemp | talk 14:42, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Big Spring, TX

I've already filed three 3RR disputes related to that page (which is a really tedious process). The problem is that the anon user seems to log in from more than one IP, so it's like a game of whack-a-mole. I'm thinking that a request for protection might be warranted at this point. OhNoitsJamieTalk 03:50, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

Good suggestions. Thanks much for your help with this; there is strength in numbers. OhNoitsJamieTalk 05:18, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

Got your message about the socktags; will do. Time for me to hit the hay. Come to think of it, isn't it pretty late in Texas? OhNoitsJamieTalk 07:18, 23 February 2006 (UTC)
yup. getting late. I'm a niteowl though. pschemp | talk 08:07, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] RFC

Though the user claims to be a "non-techie" homebound retiree in Texas, I've tagged the IP origin of all of the anon IPs. Several are from a business in Wyoming; one is from the University of Wyoming; a few are from USWest (a big telco which may serve Texas), and one of the recent ones is from a Spanish IP (I'm guessing a Proxy server). During the user's stint as User:Ohnoitsjaime, they made several Wyoming edits to establish a short track record. Sound fishy to you? I'm not sure if it's worth adding to the RFC or not. Thanks again for doing so much work on this. It's frustrating to think that we could be doing more worthwhile things with our time... OhNoitsJamieTalk 04:25, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

The whole thing is Oh so fishy. :) I put in as much evidence as I could find for the socks and I believe it supports many of the things you are talking about here. I don't think its worth adding to the RFA as we already have mutitudinous sockpuppet evidence. If it continues, you can add that and a checkuser can always be run too. At this point, I think its good. I'm going to just let Happyjoe go nuts with the article, but if the fiddling with the RfC continues I'll revert and get it taken care of. This has been frustrating, I agree. We are on the right path to fixing it though thanks to your hard work. I'm happy to lend support, I know dealing with this by yourself is maddening. pschemp | talk 04:32, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

I've confirmed that 212.142.140.149 is in fact an open proxy; if you know of other IPs he has used that are not listed at the RfC, let me know and I will scan them as well. Essjay TalkContact 08:45, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

This issue could have easily been resolved if there was a willingness to reach consensus and compromise, a willingness to open dialogue rather than deletionist bullying. Unfortunately I am not well enough versed in the ways of Wikipedia to be able to so expertly manipulate the system to my advantage as others are apparently doing. I now accept the pillars of Wikipedia and I agree to abide by all of the rules, regulations and policies of Wikipedia, including respect for consensus and NPOV. Further, I have given up my attempts to provide any input for the Big Spring, TX article. I have prayed about my actions and have been guided to seek forgiveness and change my ways. And I agree to cease making POV edits. I give my 100% word that I will not revert to my old ways and will strive to be a model citizen of the Wikipedia community.
