Primera División Peruana 1994

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1994 season of the Primera División Peruana, the top category of Peruvian football (soccer), was played by 16 teams. The national champions were Sporting Cristal, beginning a run of three consecutive titles.

The 1994 season was split into two parts; the Apertura tournament and the regular season. The Apertura was played to determine who obtained the Copa CONMEBOL 1995 berth. The winner of this tournament gained 2 bonus points for the regular season. The Apertura tournament had the teams divided into two round-robin groups of eight played. The winners, Sporting Cristal and Ciclista Lima, played the Apertura final, which Sporting Cristal won. The regular season, determined who obtained the two Copa Libertadores 1995 berths, the national champions, and which two teams were relegated to the Copa Peru and the Segunda División Peruana. The team that placed second in the regular season qualified for the Liguilla post-season with one bonus point while the teams that placed third to eighth contested a playoff round. From the playoff round, three teams qualified for the Liguilla post-season. The Liguilla was played by four teams and won by Alianza Lima, gaining the second Copa Libertadores berth.
