[edit] Rant about record companies
I have great qualms about the war the greedy record companies are waging on ordinary folk for freely downloading their overpriced merchandise from the internet. I laugh whenever Ihear about their high profile legal battles which are a public relations catastrophe for them ;-)[1]. It's even more funny that they will not admit it is a disaster. Thanks to Steve Jobs, who come along in 2001 and turned a major loss for the industry into commercial salvation, yet record moguls are once again turning against iTunes, they complain the 60-odd cents (on the dollar) they receive for each dematerialised iTunes song is not enough. What is more, they complain that they should have the right to set different prices for different songs.[2] I reckon it's much more than they would otherwise have obtained due to the existence of a mixture of "piracy" and decreased distribution costs for the physical CDs.
However, I would still prefer it if the music files sold on iTunes did not have DRM incorporated. It doesn't take a high-school student to work out that equipment manufacturers and record companies alike would break Apple Inc.'s stranglehold on digital music retailing and MP3 players by scrapping their insistence on DRM. But they are just too terrified of a return to the old model of Kazaa and Napster!
[edit] My collection
I still possess a collection of 1,200 vinyl LPs in addition to a collection of about 400 CDs. I am not at all into digital downloads for listening to music seriously, because I find the sound quality is often lacking. I often use P2P networks to download potentially interesting music to listen to on my iPod classic. If I find something to my liking, I will then buy the CD. Uninteresting stuff gets deleted within a matter of days.
Tastes are fairly mainstream, into 1970s New Wave, New Romantics, Rock, Jazz Funk/Fusion, Jazz
