Northwood High School (Silver Spring, Maryland)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Northwood High School is located in Silver Spring, Maryland, and is part of Montgomery County Public Schools. Northwood opened in 1956, but closed in 1985 due to declining population in the Silver Spring area. From 1985 to 2004, Northwood was used to hold students from other high schools which were being renovated, but reopened in 2004 due to increasing population in the area. During its original run, the schools mascot was the Indians. However since reopening the school opted to change the Indians into the Gladiators. The current principal is Henry Johnson, and the school caters to grades 9-12.

[edit] Reopening

Since reopening the school has consistently gained students, and 2008 marks the first year since the school reopened in which there are all four classes. The school has approximately 1,500 students as of 2008.

[edit] Sports

During the years since its reopening, Northwood's sports program has been considered to be not as good as that of the other school in the area. Over time the schools sports program has risen in quality, and in only their second season of having varsity teams both the male football and male basketball teams fared extremely well. The varsity football squad earned a record of 5-5 and the varsity basketball team reached the regional playoffs. These accomplishments re much better than those of some varsity sports teams at rival Blair. However, the junior varsity squads aren't nearly as good as the before-mentioned varsity teams.

[edit] Area and School Premises and Surroundings

The schools location is just up the street from Montgomery Blair High School and while still in Silver Spring, the school lies on an area that is very close to Wheaton, Maryland. Northwood has a recently remodeled multipurpose stadium (though it is mainly used for football) named after former Northwood teacher David Kaplan. The athletic area of Northwood also includes two baseball fields, a track, and a concessions area to the left of the main stands of Kaplan Stadium. Inside the school has a main Media Center that serves mainly as a library. Also included is a band room, alternate music room, a full wellness center, and a film room that is the base of operations for Northwood's television and radio station WNHS.

[edit] WNHS

WNHS is the television/radio station of Northwood high school. WNHS is an acronym that stands for "Welcome Northwood High School. During the first 20 minutes of each school day WNHS holds a news like morning announcement segment complete with current events, weather forecasts, and of course school news. While the quality is amateur at best, it still produces the news in a way that the students can understand. The station is incredibly prone to mistakes with mic and or video feeds during these morning announcements that are often played down by the student anchors with phrases such as; "well i guess we won't watch the video today". The cast of anchors varies most days but on each morning announcements show there are only two student anchors. During the rest off the day WNHS serves mainly as a radio station and many teachers will turn on the WNHS channel so that students may listen to music played by the station. Occasionally, the station plays of conversations by the anchors of the news broadcast directly before the broadcast airs live. The station was rated the top high school station in the county.
