Nightbreed is a 1990 movie based on Clive Barker's novella Cabal. It was directed by Clive Barker. To this day, Barker expresses disappointment with the final cut and longs for the recovery of the reels so it might be freshly edited.[1] Unique behind-the-scenes footage of some of the lost scenes has now been uncovered, some of which is showcased at Clive's Revelations website. It was intended as "the Star Wars of monster movies", with over two hundred monsters created by Image Animation.[citation needed]

[edit] Plot

The movie centers around Aaron Boone (portrayed by Craig Sheffer), a young man plagued by dreams of a city called Midian, populated by bizarre creatures and deviants of all types who refer to themselves as the "Nightbreed". Aaron is framed for several murders by his psychopathic therapist, subsequently killed by police and resurrected by the magic of Midian. Boone joins forces with the other monsters to defend themselves from the true monsters of the story: humankind.

David Cronenberg, despite primarily being a film director, starred as Decker, the therapist who frames Boone. Doug Bradley, who collaborated with Clive Barker as Pinhead in Hellraiser, plays Lylesburg; the Breed's self-elected lawmaker.

[edit] Comic book series

In 1990, to tie in with the film's boxoffice release, Epic Comics produced a four-issue adaptation of the film, which included significant differences from the finished movie, more closely related to Clive Barker's original script. The comic book continued to run past the end of the movie, ultimately stretching to twenty five issues before it was cancelled. A two part Hellraiser vs Nightbreed: Jihad graphic novel was also produced, featuring the Cenobites as agents of order against their chaotic nemeses, the Nightbreed.

[edit] Videogames

An interactive movie-style videogame based on the film was released on the Commodore Amiga shortly after the movie's release. Loosely following the same plot, it intersperses various action sequences though was not highly regarded.[citation needed] A traditional action game was also released for the Amiga, Atari ST, Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC and DOS.[2]

[edit] Trivia

  • The studio had so little faith in the film that the original teaser posters used images not from the movie, but ones that were recycled from the poster of Bad Dreams, a little-seen 1988 horror movie.
  • A softcover book was released around the same time as the film which featured photos and back stories of the main characters as well as minor characters seen only in the background throughout the movie.
  • The Director's cut of Nightbreed will be released on DVD with 25 minutes of additional material if Clive Barker can find the missing footage, according to his site.

[edit] Influences on Music

  • Legendary Nottingham dark underground record label Nightbreed Recordings formed in 1991
  • The Horror Punk band Frankenstein Drag Queens, fronted by Wednesday 13, have a song named "Nightbreed" on their album 6 years, 6 feet under the influence
  • The punk band Screeching Weasel also produced a song named "Nightbreed" on their album Thank You Very Little.
  • The metal band Cradle of Filth released an album entitled Midian in 2000 which is conceptually set in the fictional city.
  • UK rapper Jehst along with Klashnekoff and Kyza released a tune entitled 'Nightbreed' as the B side to Jehst's 'Alcoholic Author' single, released on his own imprint 'YNR Records' in 2002
  • Chicago experimental techno-industrial duo DJ? Acucrack sampled parts of the script in their track titled Meninges in their 2007 album Humanoids from the Deep (album).
  • The underground black metal band Lord Foul sampled a few lines as intro to several songs in their demo.
