The National Institute of Technology, Srinagar(formerly Regional Engineering College, Srinagar), commonly known as NIT-Srinagar or NIT-S, is an Institute of National Importance in Northern India.[1]It forms a part of the league along with other NITs in India.

The National Institute of Technology, Srinagar was established in 1960 as the Regional Engineering College, Srinagar. It was one of the first eight Regional Engineering Colleges established in India during the first Five Year Plan.[2] The institute shifted to its present campus in 1965. As the Regional Engineering College, the college was affiliated to the University of Kashmir.The Regional Engineering College, Srinagar was upgraded as the National Institute of Technology, Srinagar in July, 2003.[3] In the same year, the institution was granted Deemed University status with the approval of the University Grants Commission, All India Council of Technical Education and the Government of India. On August 15th 2007 it became an Institute of National Importance under the NIT Bill[4][5]

Over the years the Institute has won recognition as an important National Institute in the field of Technical Education and has been playing a pivotal role in the development of the Kashmir region.[citation needed] The institute has produced more than 8000 graduates[6] who are well placed in industry, government departments and institutes both in India and abroad. The College has well equipped laboratories, faculty with high academic profile, computer facilities and infrastructure adequate enough to ensure imparting of quality education in tune with the requirements of the modern industry. The curriculum is constantly updated and the faculty is encouraged to get exposed to advanced areas of technology through their participation in Faculty Improvement Programs and Quality Improvement Programs. Apart from imparting professional education at the graduate and postgraduate levels, the Institute has been extending available expertise to various Governments, semi-government and private organizations through testing and consultancy services.

The National Institute of Technology, Srinagar is located on the western bank of the Dal Lake near the Hazratbal Shrine in the northern region of the Srinagar city.[7][8]It is about 8 km from the Tourist Reception Centre from where transport facilities are available to various locations all over the city. The city of Srinagar is connected to the rest of the country by the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway (NH-1A)[9], which is considered by many as the lifeline of the Kashmir Valley[10]. The highway passes through high mountain passes which are picturesque and enjoyable, and can be covered in about 6-7 hours by a car.[11] The nearest railway station from where trains to other parts of India are available is at Udhampur (Jammu region), about 250 km from Srinagar. The Srinagar airport is only 20 km from the institute and has daily flights to Jammu and Delhi.

NIT Srinagar has 8 Engineering departments, 4 Applied science departments which were established to provide support of basic sciences in engineering education and to inculcate social and managerial talent in students.

[edit] Admission procedure
Like in all the other National Institutes of Technology in the country, admission into the NIT Srinagar in the graduate courses can be taken by qualifying in an entrance examination, known as the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE)[12] conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). For post-graduate or M.Tech. courses the entrance is through the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering better known as GATE.

The Institute has excellent infrastructure, well equipped laboratories, a very dedicated and competent faculty in all disciplines. The other facilities that are provided to the students are a Central Library which is open till late night, computer services centre with internet access and other facilities which is open till late night. This center is in addition to the departmental computer centres.
The Institute provides boarding facilities to all the students and the faculty members in the campus itself. The students also have the option to stay outside the campus as day-scholars. The Institute provides separate hostels for the boys and girls with separate mess facility.The different hostels are:
- Chenab Boys Hostel
- Indus Boys Hostel
- Jhelum Boys Hostel
- Girls Hostel
All the hostels are well maintained and are equipped with all necessary facilities, favorable to the environment in Kashmir. Jehlum hostel has been covered under the Institute networking project,because of which each room has got internet facility. In addition to this, other hostels are given a cyber cafe each.
There is a two storey Medical Unit with 24 hours medical assistance within the campus with a full time doctor and other paramedical staff. Medical lab facilities such as ECG, X-Ray, etc. are also available in the Medical Unit. The Medical Unit also has an ambulance at its disposal.
The Institute has a Common Hall, where the students can play indoor games like Table Tennis, Badminton, Carroms, Chess, etc. The Common Hall is also equipped with a television where the students can watch various programmes. Apart from this, the Common Hall also serves as a gathering point for all the students to conduct various activities and events like computer gaming competitions, etc. There are numerous other facilities like an Activity Centre, a gymnasium, etc. The Institute also provides all facilities for outdoor games. There is a playing field with Hand Ball court, Volley Ball court, Cricket, Football, Hockey, tennis courts etc.
The Institute has a Maintenance Engineering Centre set up under the Indo-Italian collaboration. The centre will cater to the maintenance engineering needs of the Institute and as the region as a whole in respect of research, consultancy and academics.
Basic amenities like Post & Telegraph, Telecom Center, a branch of the Jammu & Kashmir Bank, an Automated Teller Machine (ATM), Canteen, Cafetaria, coffee vending machine, stationery shops, general stores, Co-operative Stores etc. are also available in the Campus.[13]
