The National Institute of Technology, Durgapur, India (formerly Regional Engineering College, Durgapur), was established under an Act of the Parliament of India in 1960 as one of the eight such colleges aimed to function as a pace-setter for engineering education in the country and to foster national integration. It is a fully funded premier Technological Institution of the Government of India and is administered by an autonomous Board of Governors. In 2010, NIT-Durgapur is going to celebrate its Golden Jubilee Year (completing 50 years), NIT-Durgapur is one of the oldest of 14-RECs established between 1959 and 1965.
As of 15th August 2007 NIT Durgapur has been declared as an Institute of National Importance under the NIT Act, thus enabling it and other NITs to become centres of excellence like IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) and help fulfil the need of the country for quality manpower in the field of engineering, science, technology and management.

The Institute is located about 180 km north-west of Kolkata / Calcutta on the Howrah-Delhi railway route and overlooking the Grand Trunk Road. The Institute spreads over an area of 187 acres (76 ha) of land. It is fully residential and co-educational. At present about 2300 boys and 400 girls reside in seven boys' hostels and two girls' hostels. The annual undergraduate intake is about 550 students. The Institute is a deemed university which awards under graduate (B.Tech.) and post graduate / master (M.Tech, M.C.A, M.B.A and Ph.D.) degrees to students after their successful completion of the specified courses. The college imparts education in the disciplines of Bio Technology, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering and Metallurgical Engineering.
NIT-Durgapur enjoys one of the best academic ecosystem as this institute falls under India's richest educational belt, constitutes of IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) - Kharagpur, MERI (Marine Engineering and Research Institute) - Kolkata, CMERI (Central Mechanical Engineers Research Institute) - Durgapur, ISI (Indian Statistical Institute) - Kolkata, IIM (Indian Institute of Management) - Kolkata, Jadavpur University - Kolkata,ISI- Kolkata, Indian School of Mines University - Dhanbad, Institute of Radio Physics and Electronics - Kolkata, Calcutta University - Kolkata and many other leading Research Institutes which are located in and around Kolkata.
Alumni Of this Institute occupied key positions in various global corporations and some of them have grown as Entrepreneurs. NIT-Durgapur boasts High-Voltage Laboratory which is only sixth of such in India. After getting the status of NIT from MHRD the Institute has seen more flow of funds and aiming to be one of the best Technical Institute in INDIA. A new and state of the art country's first Nanotechnology lab among the Engineering colleges is soon to be set up . The computer science department also has a CISCO lab in collaborations with CISCO systems.
[edit] Admission Procedure
For Under Graduate Courses: NIT Durgapur admits students for UG courses through AIEEE(A National level entrance for NITs and Other Engineering Colleges in India). Following a procedure laid down by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Govt. of India, National Institute of Technology, Durgapur, selects candidates for its own admission and 16 other NITs who admit such students on the basis of National Rankings of the Students in the AIEEE.

National Institute of Technology, Durgapur is a fully residential Institute. There are seven hostels for boys and two hostels for girls to accommodate all the admitted students. Canteen for the students and the staff is located beside the College main building. Second canteen is located at rear exit of the College Main Building in addition another canteen is located near the boys hostels which serves till mid night and snacks counter is also there.
All the teachers and most of the staff members reside in the residential quarters provided by the college. A modern guest house beside the Director's Bungalow extends hospitality to the guests of the Institute. In the middle of the residential area there is a shopping complex which meets the daily requirements of the residents.
A model co-educational higher secondary school has been set up for the wards of the employees of the Institute. Also there is a branch of State Bank of India, Canara Bank and a Post-Office within the Institute Campus.

To encourage research oriented thinking in young minds NIT-Durgapur recently started offering Research Scholar Programme and the Institute recently started bio-technology engineering course to contribute quality manpower to this booming field. As the Institute becomes fully autonomous, NIT-Durgapur is planning to launch various courses such as Integrated Master courses, stressing on VLSI and signal processing, keeping in mind industry requirements. Institute also planning to increase the intake of students in the coming 4-5 years to produce high-quality technical manpower. NIT-Durgapur also planning to upgrade its curriculum syllabus to include latest technology trends in the coming years. After upgraded to NIT, Institute started recruiting high-quality faculty to serve growing demands.
All students on campus enjoy high speed internet in residential hostels, giving students an option to track technology trends and gives an opportunity to explore more e-learning resources.The whole campus is wired by high bandwidth internet. In the last 3 years the Institute placement record is consistently more than 85% and more MNCs showing interest to recruit students as Institute admits students through National Level Entrances. The Institute consistently conducts work shops,seminars to educate students and professionals about technology innovations and trends.

As the NIT structure attracts best students from all corners of the country the Institute provides perfect platform for young engineers to excel not only technically but also gives great opportunity to develop interpersonal skills, leadership and entrepreneur qualities. Students' activities here are multifaceted. They run various hobby clubs, organize events, publish magazines, do social services, etc. Apart from this students of NIT-Durgapur consistently participated and won many laurels in various National Level Technical festivals. Many former students from this Institute are pursuing management courses from prestigious IIMs, ISB, FMS, XLRI, SP Jain, IIFT and MDI Gurgaon and many students clear GATE every year for M.Tech Courses. The college has a lot of students studying in universities abroad like USC, University of Kentucky, Boston University, Purdue, Cambridge University,Iowa,Texas,Illinois etc. Alumni of NIT Durgapur have also graduated from prestigious business schools such as the Ross School of Business Michigan, Kellogg School of Management, University of Chicago GSB, MIT Sloan and the Wharton School. As the Institute became NIT more funds started flowing subsequently many facilities like library, internet, sports and many facilities inside campus have seen a big change and that provides wide options for students. NIT Durgapur attracting top rankers in AIEEE for its undergraduate courses.
