The Montgomeryshire district was one of three districts of Powys from 1974 - 1996. The district had an identical area to the previous administrative county of Montgomeryshire. Until 1986 the name of the district was Montgomery.
The Montgomery district was created under the Local Government Act 1972 and replaced the following local government areas from April 1, 1974:
- The municipal boroughs of Llanfyllin, Llanidloes, Montgomery and Welshpool
- The urban districts of Machynlleth and Newton and Llanllwchaiarn
- The rural districts of Forden, Llanfyllin, Machynlleth and Newton and Llanidloes
The district was abolished in 1996 by the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994, when it became part of the unitary authority of Powys.
