[edit] Explosion
Monkton suffered an explosion during 2007, and was largely evacuated as a result. The Fire and Rescue service says that crews were faced with "a well developed fire in a large single-storey building", which was among the largest in the hamlet. Twenty people had to be removed from the area due to the destruction of their environment there.[1]
[edit] School
Monkton has a small joint junior and infant school which caters for the needs of the hamlet's population. The Monkton Church of England primary school has 103 students.[2]
It achieved "very good" on its OFSTED inspection, although OFSTED reported that parents raise concerns about the lack of buildings, especially in Winter,[3] where the children have to learn outside for some lessons.
