Mid Sweden University (Mittuniversitetet) is a Swedish university with four campuses in Östersund, Sundsvall, Härnösand and Örnsköldsvik.
Created on July 1, 1993, the institution was originally called Mid Sweden University College (Mitthögskolan) and was the result of a merger between the University College of Sundsvall/Härnösand (Högskolan i Sundsvall/Härnösand) and the University College of Östersund (Högskolan i Östersund)[1]. The two university colleges had been founded in the early 1970s, along with a number of other university colleges in different regions of Sweden. On July 1, 1995, the Sundsvall/Örnsköldsvik and Sundsvall Colleges of Health Sciences (Vårdhögskolan i Sundsvall) were also incorporated.[2] Effective January 1, 2005, the government of Sweden granted the institution the right to call itself a university and the school's name changed to Mid Sweden University (Mittuniversitetet).
Mid Sweden University has two authorised areas of research (vetenskapsområde): the natural sciences (naturvetenskapligt, since 2001) and the humanities and social sciences (humanistiskt/samhällsvetenskapligt, since 2005). The university has offered master's degrees (magisterexamen) since 1994, doctoral degrees (doktorsexamen) since 2001 and Master of Science in Engineering degrees (civilingenjörsexamen) since 2004[3].
The university’s four main campuses have different focuses but with some overlap. The Härnösand campus has a school of education and offers various courses in the humanities and arts. The Sundsvall campus has a wide range of courses and degrees in the technical and natural sciences. The Östersund campus focuses on graduate degrees in tourism, health care, social work and public administration. The Örnsköldsvik campus offers health care education and focuses on technical research.
In 2005, the university had approximately 13,000 students with around half of them based in Östersund, 4,500 in Sundsvall, 3,000 in Härnösand and 300 in Örnsköldsvik.
