Linköping University (Swedish: Linköpings universitet, LiU) is a university in Linköping, Sweden. It was founded in the 1960s and reached university status in 1975, making it Sweden's sixth university. It has four faculties and 23 departments, many of which teach students from more than one faculty. A number of knowledge centres are also associated with the university. In 1996 the university started a branch in the neighbouring city of Norrköping. Approximately 25,000 students (20,000 in Linköping and 5,000 in Norrköping) were enrolled in 2002.
It is famous for its interdisciplinary approach, for example the educational programmes Industrial Engineering & Management, International Business Administration (including language studies) and Cognitive Science and Information Technology. Research in the Arts & Sciences faculty is done in interdisciplinary themes, spanning over several different areas. Another speciality is the focus on problem based learning which is adopted in several of its educational programmes.
The main campus, Campus Valla, is located about three kilometers west of the Linköping city center, and three of the four faculties are based here. The bulk of the student body lives in the adjacent residential area Ryd. Just south of the city center, Campus US is located in connection with the University hospital (US for Universitetssjukhuset). Most of the medical education and research are done here, and it is the location of the faculty for Health sciences. Campus Norrköping is situated right in the city center of Norrköping, a city 28 miles to the northeast of Linköping. The campuses are connected by the "Campus Bus" which is free for students.
"LiU School of Management" offers one of the top-ranked management educations in Scandinavia e.g. MBA's and Bachelor in International Business. The education consists of a regular master with additional language studies in German, Spanish or French.
In 2006 the third "International Conference on Information Technology in Business", ITIB 2006, is organised by Warsaw Agricultural University, Linköping University and St. Petersburg State University of Economics and Finance at LiU.
