[edit] Origin and recording

It was written by frontman Eddie Vedder. "MFC" stands for "Mini Fast Car". The song was premiered at a 1996 Eddie Vedder solo show in Rome in which he was backed by some friends on bass and drums.[1]

[edit] Lyrical meaning

Regarding the meaning of the song, in Pearl Jam's Single Video Theory DVD Vedder explained, "Obviously it’s in a car and you’re getting the fuck out of a problem, you know. Or out of a bad situation."[2] Eddie Vedder was inspired by the small automobiles in Rome. When asked about the song in an interview, Vedder stated:

It stands for mini fast car. You drive them on an open road outside of Rome. They go as fast as one of those little things will go. You know, they've got really small wheels, it's amazing how fast they can go. It's kinda like me, yeah. One of these days I'm going to get to where I'm going and just stop. Get to the year 2000 and stop. What do I see for 2000? It's not a big deal day for me, but I'm excited about the idea that everyone will be thinking about one thing all at once. It'll be this form of mass consciousness (sic). I'm sure nothing will come of it, except maybe the biggest simultaneous hangover in our still-young history.[3]

[edit] Live performances

The first performance of the song by Pearl Jam took place at the band's February 20, 1998 concert in Maui, Hawaii.[4] In concert the song is usually preceded by a song dubbed "Untitled" which segues into "MFC". Live performances of "MFC" can be found on the live albums Live on Two Legs and Live at the Gorge 05/06. Performances of the song are also included on the DVDs Single Video Theory and Touring Band 2000.
