Route 56 is a road running 20 miles. It begins at Route 12 in Oxford. It crosses the French River twice in Oxford. It crosses Route 20 in North Oxford. it intersects with the Massachusetts Turnpike (Interstate 90) in North Oxford near the Leicester town line but there is no interchange. Route 56 intersects with Route 9 at Leicester Center. Shortly after entering Paxton Center, it joins with Route 122 and runs northwest to the intersection with Route 31 in Paxton Center. From there, Route 56 continues north, intersecting Route 122A in Rutland Center, and ends at Route 68 in North Rutland.
