Markus Meckel (August 18, 1952 -) is a German theologian and politician. He is also a member of the Bundestag, the German parliament.

[edit] Birth and Education

Markus Meckel was born on August 18, 1952 in Müncheberg, Brandenburg. He had to leave high school in 1969 for political reasons. From 1969 to 1971, he studied at Kirchenoberseminar Hermannswerder, a boarding school operated by the church whose diploma allowed its students to study theology or sacred music only. From 1971 to 1978, Meckel studied theology in Naumburg and Berlin.

Already for years Meckel engaged himself with the GDR opposition in 1970s. In October 1989, he initiated the establishment of the social-democratic party of the GDR together with Martin Gutzeit. From 23 February 1990 up to the combination Party Congress with the SPD on 27 September 1990, he was deputy SDP party chairman. Besides he led chairman of the SDP after the resignation from Ibrahim Böhme from 26 March to 10 June 1990. From March to October 1990 Meckel belonged to the first free-selected people chamber of the GDR. Since 3 October 1990 he is member of the German federal daily. From 1992 to 1994 he was speaker of the SPD Bundestag faction in the Enquête commission processing of history and consequences of the SED dictatorship in Germany and from 1994 to 1998 speakers of the SPD faction in the Enquete commission overcoming of the consequences of the SED dictatorship in the process of the German unit. In the Bundestag the political emphasis Meckels is on the European politics and on the relations with Poland; since 1994 he is a chairmen of the GermanPolish group of parliamentarians. Since 1991 he belongs beside it to the parliamentary meeting of NATO. Since 1998 he is director/conductor of the German delegation. From November 2000 until November 2002 he was vice-president of the parliamentary meeting of NATO.

Markus Meckel belongs to the German Bundestag since the election to the Bundestag 1990 as directly selected delegates. With the election to the Bundestag 2005 it reached Barnim I 39,6 % the Erststimmen in its constituency Uckermark -.

On 12 April 1990, he became a Minister for foreign affairs in Prime Minister Lothar de Maizière (CDU) led government of the GDR appoint. In his term of office, it was common as ministers of foreign affairs with Hans Dietrich Genscher one the representative of the two German states with the two-plus four-discussions with winner powers of the Second World War over a convention, which should smooth the way to the reunification of Germany.

On 20 August 1990, Meckel withdrew together with the social-democratic Ministers from the cabinet. The office of the minister of foreign affairs was taken over by Lothar de Maizière. Meckel is an advice chairman of the donation to the processing of the SED dictatorship and besides member of the adviser of the BStU.

Markus Meckel was twice married and has six children. He is active in the dia.-conical work of the Evangelist church.
