In hopes of standardizing the appearance of exit lists across Wikipedia articles involving roads, this exit list guide has been created to give editors a basis for creating, editing and maintaining exit lists pertaining to all highways around the world.

[edit] Basis for guideline
Several discussions regarding the designing of exit lists have occurred in the past, and can be found on this guide's talk page, and at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject U.S. Interstate Highways and Wikipedia talk:WikiProject U.S. Interstate Highways/Archive 2. These discussions have resulted in the standard outlined below.
[edit] Standard
For highways that span multiple countries or states, the exit list should be broken up. This makes the list easier to read and easier to maintain. This can be done either through section breaks and separate tables for each country or state, by putting a multi-column row in the table at the border, or by placing them on separate articles (like Interstate 95 in Virginia).
Don't use background colors in the exit tables.
[edit] Standard columns
- County (or other regional subdivision (e.g. parish in Louisiana), if applicable): The name of the county or subdivision, wikilinked, that the exit is in. This should be formatted as a rowspan to encompass all exits. This column is optional for routes that are within a single subdivision, and should be left out if the state or country has no commonly-used subdivisions.
- Location: The location of the exit, wikilinked, whether it be a town, city, or village. If the location is indeterminable, this should be left blank. This column is optional for routes that are within a single location.
- Mile or km: The measured location of the exit. If no source is available, and the road uses a distance-based exit numbering system, then this column can be left out in favor of the exit number column. For exit lists in California, the term "Postmile" should be used instead of "Mile" due to Caltrans' county-based mileage system; the fact that the numbers reset at county lines should be noted above the table. (This may change in the future if a source for all postmile equations is found.) County abbreviations should not be placed before the postmiles, but can be listed in the county column along with the postmile range in that county.
- #: The number of the exit/junction. If old and new numbers exist, these should be presented as two columns, "Old" and "New". Exit numbers should be written in plain type (i.e. not bolded). Do not include this column if exits are not numbered.
- Destinations: Locations and roads as presented on guide signs for the exit. Other locations should not be listed unless that location is extremely notable and well known; an entry in the notes column "serves Alaska State College" can be used. Routes not indicated on the guide signs can be included in parentheses.
- Notes: Any additional notes about the interchange or terminus, such as opening date or additional locations that do not merit inclusion in "Destinations".

When linking to highways, a commonly-used abbreviation should be used for the displayed text for the link. For instance: I-59, A1.

Shields should generally have a height of 20px. For many three-digit shields, this requires the shields to be 25px in width.
[edit] Inclusion and exclusion

- All interchanges with no exceptions.
- Concurrencies.
- Toll barriers.
- Water bodies, within reason. If possible, wikilink to the article on the bridge carrying the roadway over said water body.
- Service areas, within reason. If multiple exist, limit those displayed to those of historical/other significance.

- Crossings with other highways where no interchange between the highways exists.
[edit] Special-case scenarios
- Some exits may have the same number for different interchanges. Some exits may have different numbers for the same interchange. In each case though, the list should be broken up by exit number, not by interchange, to maintain a consistent appearance.
- Interchanges with signage that lists both the road name(s) and the route number should have both included in the exit list. If multiple names are given, every name should be listed. See the example for how to format these entries.
- Toll barriers should be shown by way of a multi-column row. Ideally this should span the Destinations and Notes columns, allowing the milepost where the barrier is located to appear to the left.
- Directional exits should be formatted in the following pattern: "(road shield) (link to road article) (direction)".
- Example: NY 252 east
- Note that shields should always be at the beginning of the line, per Wikipedia:Manual of Style (flags)#Not for use in general article prose: "Such misuse of icons in prose breaks up the continuity of the text, distracting the reader."
[edit] Concurrencies
There are two methods for displaying concurrencies. Either a simple note can be placed in the notes column for the interchanges where the concurrency begins and ends, or a multi-column row can be used to mark the termini of the concurrency. Ideally, this multi-column row should span the Destinations and Notes columns, allowing the milepost and exit number to appear to the left.
In some cases, a concurrency between two freeways can cause the exits along one freeway to "adopt" the exit numbering system of the other for the length of the concurrency, then revert back to the original numbering system after the concurrency. See Interstate 77 in Virginia for an example in practice. To deal with this issue, any and all exit numbers for that interchange should be displayed. Also, multi-column rows should be used to explain the change in numbering scheme.
[edit] Proposed or former interchanges
If an interchange is permanently closed or not yet open, a light shade of gray (for instance e7e7e7) can be used for the background of that row, so that it does not appear to be an existing interchange. Do not add proposals that have not reached the construction phase. Do not add future exit numbers without a reliable source such as signing plans.
[edit] Interchanges with multiple exits
If there are two exits in an interchange, one for each direction of the crossing road, they should generally be combined into one row, unless this would complicate matters. If the two exits have different numbers, that should be noted in the notes column, for example "signed as exits 1A (north) and 1B (south) eastbound", in a case where only the eastbound freeway has the split.
If two interchanges with different roads have the same number with different lettered suffixes, they should not generally be combined.

Please keep in mind that this is a guideline. In some cases, notably concurrency termini, there are different methods of doing the same thing, and this guideline makes no preference of one system over another. Rather than needlessly editing back and forth, please follow the format of the first complete and compliant exit list on the article.

Four best-practice examples of exit lists designed according to the above standards are shown below. Depicted are Interstate 590, a portion of Interstate 35 in Missouri, a portion of the M6 motorway, and a portion of the Tomei Expressway, respectively.
