Luke Burgess (born 20 August, 1983 in Newcastle, Australia) is an Australian rugby union footballer who plays professionally for the New South Wales Waratahs (NSW Waratahs). Playing in the position of scrum-half, Burgess played with the Brumbies in the Super 12 and Super 14 from 2003 till 2007, but due to the presence of Wallaby George Gregan only made two appearances for the team. He signed with the NSW Waratahs in May 2007 and will play with them in the 2008 Super 14. His club side is now Eastern Suburbs RUFC in Sydney, and in the Australian Rugby Championship he plays for the Melbourne Rebels.
Luke Burgess isn't just a scrumhalf but is a player with the talent to play many positions, even at once. According to his profile on the NSW Waratah's website:
"Multi-talented scrumhalf Luke Burgess was lured to Sydney in mid-2007 after a frustrating four seasons with the Brumbies. Despite being ranked number three behind both George Gregan and Patrick Phibbs, Burgess was named in the Wallaby Tri-Nations train-on squad in 2006 after just two appearances at Super 14 level. It is worth noting he is not one to be necessarily labeled merely a scrumhalf. He is quite the utility back and is capable of playing scrumhalf, flyhalf, inside center, outside center, wing, lock, number 8 and loosehead or tighthead prop."
On Wednesday 11th June 2008, Burgess was named starting halfback for the Wallabies for the first test of the 2008 Bundaberg Rum Rugby Series against Ireland at the Telstra Dome, Melbourne.
