Lock, Shock, and Barrel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lock, Shock, and Barrel

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lock, Shock, and Barrel are fictional characters in the animated movie The Nightmare Before Christmas. Introduced as Oogie Boogie's not-so-loyal "little henchmen", all three are trick-or-treaters, with faces similar to their masks (e.g. Barrel's skeleton mask has a huge grin on it and he has a near-permanent grin). Lock, Shock, and Barrel are dressed as a devil, a witch, and a skeleton, respectively. Their names are a play on the phrase, "lock, stock, and barrel." In the movie, Lock was voiced by Paul Reubens, Shock was voiced by Catherine O'Hara, and Barrel was voiced by Danny Elfman. In video game spin-offs, Lock was voiced by Jess Harnell, Shock by Kath Soucie and Cathy Cavadini, and Barrel by Dee Bradley Baker and Jeff Bennett.

They are also not very loyal to Oogie as they are simply making mischief to stay on his good side and after his death they just do harmless fun which they seem to enjoy more. However, this is contrasted by their lack of common sense as, presumebly due to their lust for mischief they have shown no protest when their master was revived in the spinoffs, and once out of boredom revived him themselves in "Oogie's Revenge". Also, it should be noted that, while Shock and Barrel rarely remove their masks, Lock rarely puts his on.

[edit] Characters

  • Lock is 6 years old and supposedly the leader and second oldest of Oogie's Boys, but does not think thoroughly. Lock wears a devil costume; his barbed tail moves as though alive, his teeth are pointed sharply, his face is narrow and long-jawed, and his hair is waxed into two horns, lending him a devilish but handsome appearance even when his mask is removed. He loves being large and in charge.
  • Shock is 7 years old and the most cunning and dangerous, only female, and the oldest of Oogie's minions and because of this is most likely the real leader of the three. She has some contempt for the other two for their supposed "stupidity". Shock wears a purple witch costume with an enlongated hat and behaves in unfeminine ways. There is no difference between her mask and her face, other than the former's green color and lack of any features (except eye-holes and a nose). She can, however, be a little sassy and is very wary of her feminism when around her brothers. She knows how to bake.
  • Barrel is 5 years old, Oogie's "star pupil", the youngest, and mistakenly considered the most stupid of the three troublemakers, despite his protests to the contrary. He is the butt of many jokes made by his siblings but usually gets even through his own tricks at which he always gets away with. Barrel wears a skeleton costume and has deformed feet, but otherwise resembles a small human boy, albeit one with blanched white skin, sunken eyes, and perfectly combed back green hair. His face is round and wears a perpetual grin, except when he is angry. Barrel is usually the pilot of the walking bathtub the trio use as transport. He also likes to eat pumpkins. Barrel is quick to stand up for either of his siblings and appears in fact to be the most intelligent of the three. He is also somewhat a bit of a crybaby and usually unintentionally bothers Jack when asking him loads of annoying (and somewhat embarassing) questions.

[edit] The Nightmare Before Christmas

Instructing them to "leave that no-account Oogie Boogie OUT of this!", Jack sends Lock, Shock, and Barrel to "Kidnap the Sandy Claws" (the Halloween Town residents' mistaken name for Santa Claus). At first, they accidentally capture the Easter Bunny, whereupon Jack apologizes and sends them back. They then capture their true quarry. The trio take Sandy Claws to Oogie's lair, where Oogie taunts and threatens Sandy. Shortly after Jack defeats Oogie and rescues Sandy Claws, a hatch above opens and Lock, Shock, and Barrel appear, having led the Mayor to Oogie's lair. In the deleted scenes, a sequence shows Lock, Shock, and Barrel spectating as Oogie tortures and teases Sandy Claws and Sally the rag doll. They watch from their moving cage that hangs on a rope; Jack slips down and scares them away before entering Oogie's lair. The only time their names are mentioned in the movie is the scene they say them to the mayor, arguing that Jack had sent for them by name.

[edit] Video Games

[edit] The Nightmare Before Christmas: The Pumpkin King

In The Nightmare Before Christmas: The Pumpkin King, a sort of prequel to the movie, Oogie Boogie sends Lock, Shock, and Barrel out to nab the new "Pumpkin King"; they come back with Sally instead, saying she looked like Jack in the dark. Throughout the game, they are behind most of the ruckus going on around town, from poisoning the acid pools to drive the leeches crazy and knocking down the town's street lamps to luring Jack into death traps and helping Oogie in the final battle.

[edit] The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie's Revenge

In The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie's Revenge, when Jack leaves Halloween Town, Lock, Shock, and Barrel decide to revive Oogie Boogie. In the game, Jack encounters the three one by one. In chapter 15, the threesome tries to stop Jack a final time; he defeats them, although they spring a trap and drop him into a maze beneath the Mayor's house. They do not appear again in the game afterwards.

[edit] Kingdom Hearts series

[edit] Kingdom Hearts

In Kingdom Hearts, after hearing Jack speak of a heart that can control the Heartless, Oogie sends the three out to steal the heart as his plan to take over Halloween Town. After the three are defeated by Sora, Donald, and Goofy, they confess that Oogie sent them out.

[edit] Kingdom Hearts II

In Kingdom Hearts II, Lock, Shock, and Barrel start off working as Doctor Finklestein's assistants, though were promised the Experiment would be theirs to boss around. The three revert to their old ways soon enough when they encounter Maleficent, who revives Oogie Boogie for them. While she and Oogie go off to kidnap Santa Claus, Maleficent gives the trio the use of the Prison Keeper Heartless to hold off Sora and company. The monster keeps the children in a cage underneath its body, but swallows one of them to act as its "pilot." Under Lock's control, the monster's arms turn red and it uses fire magic. Under Shock's control, the monster's arms turn yellow and it ascends into the sky to rain magic bolts down on the party. Under Barrel's control, the monster's arms turn green and it uses physical attacks like swinging the cage and trying to eat Sora. Toward the end of the fight, the monster swallows all three of them, turning its arms black and causing it to go out of control, attacking Sora and party with its full repertoire. After its defeat, the trio run off and unintentionally reveal Oogie's return.

In the second visit, the three are accused of stealing presents after they enter Santa's workshop and are caught looking through gifts. Sora, Jack Skellington and others have to fight these mischievous rascals by knocking them unconscious and putting them in boxes. In the end, the three claim that they didn't steal the presents, as they regarded Christmas toys as lame and stupid, and it's discovered that it was actually Doctor Finklestein's Experiment. They also cause mischief as obstacles in the Making Presents mini game, before and after the fight with the Experiment.
