Talk:List of mental illnesses

Why Are Almost All These Terms On The Previous Page Capitalized? Is That What People In Medical Professions Do--Capitalize Everything? --KQ

They are capitalized because they are Proper Nouns, as well as being capitalized in the DSM-IV.
TextPad is great for this sort of letter-crunching. But now some of the links are broken. I'm moving pages with Capitalized Names. Here's the old list to compare:

[edit] Move the list

This page should probably be moved to List of mental illnesses. --Diberri | Talk 22:39, May 20, 2004 (UTC)

Done. --Pythagorus One 19:27, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] List

I am sure some of these illnesses in the list are not in fact a type of mental illness. What do you think of this claim of mine? If you agree, which ones should be deleated from the list?

--Admiral Roo 14:00, Jun 21, 2005 (UTC)

As far as I can tell, they're all pulled straight from the DSM-IV, which would make the "mental illness" as far as any professional is concerned. siafu 15:04, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I removed the disputed tag. If there are any that you believe shouldn't be on the list, feel free to say so and why. siafu 21:45, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Fetishism, for instance. Why is it a mental illness? It's been listed by almost all doctors as a paraphilia.--Orthologist 20:34, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Homosexual

Should homosexuality really be labled as a mental illness. Personally, I believe this is true. Although, this is Wikipedia and we need a debate about this.

I believe it shouldn't be. I will take it down. If anyone has any objections, edit it back. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.115.90.55 (talk) 00:53, 11 May 2007 (UTC).

[edit] Phobias

I was wondering, isn't phobia a mental illness. There is a long list of manias and then mania by itself. Why isn't it the same for different phobias. User:Ishvara7 6/27/07 17:13 PM

You're right. I've added it to the list. Tim Q. Wells 23:26, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] "Mental disorder" versus "mental illness"

Question: starting with its very title, DSM-IV names almost everything in it as a "disorder," and there are few, if any references to "mental illness." ICD-9 also refers to "mental disorders," broken down into psychotic and non-psychotic types. Why are we using the terminology of "illness" rather than "disorder," when that is what the diagnostic manuals themselves use? Poindexter Propellerhead 23:57, 20 July 2007 (UTC)
