From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
[edit] Muhajir celebrities after independence
The term muhajir means immigrants. It is derived from Arabic and rooted in the Hijrat of Prophet Mohammed and his companions from Mecca to Madina. The people referred to here migrated to the part of India that is now Pakistan from what is now India at the time of partition of British India. The term is used for them or their parents or even their grandparents who actually migrated. The name Muhajir is also used Politically in Pakistan. In Sindh, they are mostly Urdu and Gujrati speaking while in rural Punjab, the term Muhajir is still used for those whose elders or themselves has migrated from East Punjab.
