This is the complete episode listing for the animated adaptation of Hiromu Arakawa's manga Fullmetal Alchemist (鋼の錬金術師, Hagane no Renkinjutsushi^?). The series consists of fifty-one episodes and one movie.

Fullmetal Alchemist was first aired on the Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS) in Japan on October 4, 2003 with the episode "To Challenge the Sun", and concluded with the untitled fifty-first episode on October 2, 2004,^[1] later titled "Laws and Promises" by the American distributor Funimation and retroactively named "Munich 1921" in Japan.^[2][3] It later aired on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block in the United States from November 6, 2004 through March 18, 2006.^[4][5]

A 105-minute movie titled Fullmetal Alchemist the Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa, a sequel to the television series, premiered in Japanese theaters on July 23, 2005;^[6] in the U.S., it premiered in theaters on August 24, 2006 and was released on DVD on September 12, 2006.^[7]

Due to the popularity of the series, the Twenty-sixth Annual Animage Readers' Poll recognized six of the first nine episodes as being among the best TV anime released in 2003. "Night of the Chimera's Cry" was the top-rated episode, with the five other honored episodes being: "Mother" (third place), "The Alchemy Exam" (fourth place), "The Man with the Mechanical Arm" (fifth place), "To Challenge the Sun" (seventh place), and "Be Thou for the People" (tenth place).^[8]

Izumi storms South Headquarters to rescue him, but she soon finds herself in a five-way fight over the boy.

Amid the confusion inside South Headquarters, Envy, disguised as Führer Bradley, manages to take the boy from Izumi. After ingesting Envy's Red Stones, the boy remembers who and what he truly is: the Homunculus Wrath. Izumi flees with the Homunculus to Yock Island, planning to kill him to atone for her past sins. However, her plan backfires as the Elric brothers arrive to find Wrath strangling Izumi instead.

Edward and Alphonse battle the new Homunculus known as Wrath, who wants the rest of Ed's body to make himself human. Izumi interrupts the fight by separating the combatants with a deep chasm. After Wrath escapes, Izumi sends Ed and Al to meet her alchemy teacher, an old woman named Dante, to learn an important lesson about Equivalent Exchange.

Finally, Mustang is roped by his subordinates into investigating the mystery of the "haunted" Warehouse 13.

Izumi arrives to help Ed search for Al, and the Tringum brothers arrive in Central with an important message for the Elrics. But after older brother Russell impersonates Ed again, they are captured and sentenced to death by the Führer. Finally, while traveling together in a car, Edward and Mustang have one last chance to repair their friendship before they go their separate ways.

As zeppelins rain bombs upon London during World War I, Edward and his father flee the city. As they watch the attack from a distance, Hohenheim explains that in this world, the other side of the Gate, the science of physics has developed instead of alchemy, and that Ed must open the smaller version of the Gate within himself in order to return to his true home. Meanwhile, with Hawkeye's help, Mustang sneaks into the Führer's mansion to confront him and avenge Hughes's death.

The movie's story is set two years after the events of the TV series's last episode. Edward Elric now lives in Munich, Germany, in the year 1923. Stripped of his alchemical powers, he has been researching rocketry all this time together with Alfons Heiderich, a young man who resembles his own brother. In this world parallel to his, Edward encounters some people besides Alfons whose faces are familiar to him. After lending a hand to a troubled gypsy girl, Edward is thrown in a series of events that can open him a path to return to his homeworld, where Alphonse Elric ventures deeper into the mysteries of alchemy in search of a way to reunite with his older brother, but that also can have serious consequences.

The 51 episodes are divided into 13 DVD volumes for the Japanese and North American releases. On the original Japanese DVDs, volume 1 consisted of the first two episodes, volume 13 contained the last five, and all of the volumes in between had four episodes each. FUNimation's English DVDs all have four episodes each, except for the last, which has three. There are special editions of volumes 1, 6, and 10 that contained the DVD box and three soundtracks (one for each in chronological order) inside of a tin case. FUNimation is re-releasing the series in several collections. The first, called Season 1: Part 1, contains volumes 1 through 4 and was released on September 18, 2007. The second, Season 1: Part 2, containing volumes 5, 6 and 7 was released on November 13, 2007. The third set, Season 2: Part 1, containing volumes 8, 9 and 10 was released on February 5, 2008. The fourth set, Season 2: Part 2, containing volumes 11, 12 and 13 was released on March 11, 2008.

Each volume presents unique cover art that usually signifies important characters of the volume. The North American front cover art for each box features character images over a background that shows 1/12 of a transmutation circle in rotation. The thirteenth volume displays the same spot on the transmutation circle as the 1st volume.

All thirteen DVD volumes, as well as the movie, The Conqueror Of Shamballa, have been released in the United States. A limited special edition of the movie was released on November 14, 2006. MVM had released the first eight volumes in the UK; however, Funimation gave the rights over to Revelation Films.^[10] They re-released the first 8 DVDs on February 12, 2007 before finishing up to the last DVD in 2007.

• Funimation's volume 6 DVD case is misprinted on the backside, and has the same images as the backside of volume 5 (minus the description and cover art).

• "Ready Steady Go" (episodes 2-41) and "Rewrite" are the only openings played on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim and YTV's Bionix because of a deal with L'Arc~en~Ciel and Asian Kung-Fu Generation to promote their songs.^{[citation needed]} The DVD releases from FUNimation include all openings in their original places and format.
• "Rewrite" won "Best Theme" for Fullmetal Alchemist at the first American Anime Awards on February 24, 2007.

Each of the theme songs were performed by artists under Sony Music Entertainment Japan's label, whose anime distribution unit, Aniplex, handled the production and music production for the series. All of the music score was composed and arranged by Michiru Oshima.

All the ending theme songs and animation on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim are edited down for time. The DVD releases from FUNimation include the unedited full endings. The ending of episode 25 consists of a piece of very short music from the series followed by "Tobira no Mukō e". The end credits for the episode on DVD are presented on a black background. The bombing of London by zeppelins in episodes 49 and 50 is accompanied by a music track titled "Unmei", also known as the first movement of Beethoven's Symphony No. 5.

In Japan, some time after the series' end, all four opening and all four ending songs were released together in a single CD titled Fullmetal Alchemist Complete Best, including a special DVD containing the series' creditless openings and endings. An American version of Complete Best was released recently, with the DVD features containing only the textless ending of "Kesenai Tsumi".

Episode 51's ending is from the English version. This episode includes two performances of a piano piece called "Wakare no Kyoku", also known as Frédéric Chopin's Etude in E major op.10 no.3. The first performance, a piano solo, begins when Lt. Hawkeye begins to cry over the body of Gen. Mustang (whom she believes to be dead) and continues through Envy's disappearance into the gate. The second performance, piano accompanied by oboe, begins when Winry sees Alphonse and Izumi off on their train through Edward's packing for his journey to where he can study rocketry with Hermann Oberth.
