[edit] History
Previously using the call letters KUSR, KURE was established in the early 1990's. In addition to being student-managed and student-produced, KURE is also funded by students at Iowa State University through the Government of the Student Body. KURE has always been staffed entirely by volunteer students. Student broadcasting in Friley Hall started in a dorm room as 640 AM in 1949.[1]
[edit] Programming
The station plays a wide array of music and talk radio. Hip-hop, electronica, rock, americana, and jazz are just a few of the music genres played by KURE's constantly rotating staff of student DJ's. Music played at KURE is selected from a list made by student music reviewers. Large sections of the nightly programming schedule without a dedicated DJ are filled by an automated music selector, nicknamed the Autobot.
Non-musical programming includes Iowa State University coverage of Iowa State football, basketball, and wrestling competitions. Additionally, this station provides occasional news and talk style programming.
[edit] Events
Some of the events KURE has sponsored in the past include:
- Eighties Dance/Karaoke Party
- KURE Movie Night
- Kaleidoquiz
KURE is widely known for its annual Kaleidoquiz contest, which is a 26-hour team competition that involves trivia questions every six minutes, scavenger hunts, traveling questions, and other contests interspersed throughout the 26 hours. Once the most popular radio trivia game in the world with over 6000 competitors, Kaleidoquiz is now popular only in the Iowa State community. Kaleidoquiz is conducted by KURE DJ's over the air waves and online. In recent years, the use of the internet has made this competition more accessible and the questions more difficult.
[edit] Services
Along with offering programming and sponsoring events, KURE also provides many services to Iowa State University students. They include:
- Sound system rentals at discounted rates
- Production room reservations for professional audio recording
- Public service announcements
