[edit] Finding people in Find-A-Grave lists

Hello, and thanks for finding some people on the Wikipedia:Find-A-Grave famous people lists!

The standard procedure, if you find that someone on the list is listed in Wikipedia, is:

• If it's a redlink on the list, and it seems sensible to keep the redlink (such as when it's an alternate spelling of the person's name), create a redirect.
• If there's information in the Find-A-Grave entry that is interesting for the article, add the Find-A-Grave entry to the article's external links (in practice, I do this rarely)
• Once that's done, you can just delete the person from the Find-A-Grave lists. We're done with him for that purpose!

I saw your question on the List of Medal of Honor recipients on the FLC page: Basically, if an image caption is a complete sentence, use a period ("full stop"); if it is a sentence fragment, don't use a period.

Examples

Fred Smith in his dress uniform (no period)

John Doe was awarded the Medal of Honor when he led his platoon through enemy lines. (period)

Hi Kumioko, I fixed one of your sortname templates so you could see what I did. The {{sortname}} template can take a third parameter which is the page you wish to point at so {{sortname|John|Andrews|John Andrews (Medal of Honor)}} should give you a name that shows John Andrews, sorts on Andrews and points to John Andrews (Medal of Honor). You really don't need to add a "See also" section to add a portal template. Just put the template in the article. The added "See also" section winds up displaying as an empty section. I like putting portal templates in the first section after the main article (the first end-section), such as References, Notes, See also, External links, whatever is there. The portal thingie displays the same, down at the bottom of the article where it should logically be.--BillFlis (talk) 22:17, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

I noticed you were replacing breaks in articles such as E. Urner Goodman‎, where you replaced <br /> with <br/>. This is a trivial and redundant type of edit— <br> <br /> <br/> </br> all get rendered by the MediWiki processor as <br />. If you look at the source for this page, you will see that the four breaks here are rendered the same.

One problem I encountered: The CMOH article you created for Carl Ludwig (Medal of Honor) seems to have somehow gotten its content confused with that for William Ludgate. I found this while searching for Find-A-Grave entries; it seemed simpler to let you know than to attempt to find the references myself; I know nothing about how to access CMOH citations.

User pages use a subpage structure (see Wikipedia:Subpages). The software only recognizes subpages as pages following a / in certain namespaces. (Which is why things like talk page archives are always /Archive_1, /Archive_2, etc.) Thus, your page wasn't in your user space, but was in fact floating in the user namespace. First, the anonymous editor who is making these edits is a long-time troublemaker on Wiki. He's been banned under a variety of names such as BoxingWear/Projects/User:Vesa Second, the cite he uses is an inexact cite that says that there were nearly 5000 American casualties in the war. That number was given not as a scholarly analysis, from my perspective, but merely as a rough estimate to give some context in the article. Indeed, check out the history of the user names I mentioned above. He's been a persistent problem for a couple years. His nonsense edits, his threats, his harassment, and a variety of other anti-social behavior have caused many problems here. IT would be best to reopen boxingwear account asap, then an administrator to order mkil never to touch my edits or any edits from chicago public library, and i am not the only one who edits there, as the system has over 100 000 computers. I know what you're saying. There have been some strong candidates who have lost (or never gained) the trust of the community for something they said or did during the AfD process. [[6]] is worth looking at. A candidate so committed to the project and so knowledgeable that he advised other users in how to be admins; a candidate who is calm and polite and helpful and really builds Wikipedia. Yet does a flippant throwaway application that annoys people, and then during the process starts to show poor judgement. The AfD is a snapshot. Not everyone knows the candidate and bothers to look through all the past contributions, so they go by the application itself, and by what other people dig up. Saying the right things during an AfD matters - in the same way that dressing appropriately and saying the right things at a job interview matters. The rationale you gave for wanting to be an admin was not encouraging at all. There are issues about the behaviour of some admins who think that having the approval of the admin badge and the power to block other users gives them some extra authority - that what they say matters more than what non-admins say. Your comments looked very much like someone who wanted that sort of authority and power in order to back you up in debates. And then you started to quibble with people who opposed you. That rarely goes down well with the majority of people. And then you got snappy and said you didn't want to waste your time. That showed a lack of judgement and calm at a time of intense scrutiny (if you can't keep your cool and make good judgments during your RfA, what will happen when you are not under the spotlight?) All these things lead to a poor impression. And, as people say, better to reject a potentially decent admin than to let in one who will cause friction, drama and a mess by making poor calls.

You have gathered a lot of support and should take encouragement from that. It is your decision how to go from here, but bear in mind that many excellent admins failed their first, second or even third RfA. Being snappy during your RfA is understandable. It doesn't make you a bad person at all. We all make mistakes. If you show you learned from your mistake the people will give credit for that in your next RfA. But if you present that RfA badly you won't get in that time either, and will have to try again later.

It's your judgement call. You can hold on and hope this AfD turns around, or you can close it now on your terms. There is no hurry to be an Admin. You can continue making great content on Wiki without the extra tools. You can get involved in some admin related areas to see what the issues are related to being an admin, and if you really want to be involved in that. And then either nominate yourself again, or wait till someone else nominates you.

But there is no shame in stepping forward to volunteer, even if people don't feel you are ready right now. Better to step forward than not to offer at all. Take care! SilkTork *^YES! 00:00, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

Hello Kumioko. The list is pretty close to featured status, I think, but there are a few issues remaining. All of the blocks of text need to be fully referenced with inline citations. Some of the text needs to beefed up, for example to better explain what a "Buffalo Soldier" is (that was one of the suggestions from last year's peer review). I've also been considering putting inline citations in the tables themselves, since the information is drawn from multiple sources.
