Elections

The Kilusang Bagong Lipunan (New Society Movement) (formerly Kilusang Bagong Lipunan ng Nagkakaisang Nacionalista, Liberal, at iba pa, in English New Society Movement of United Nacionalistas, Liberals, et cetera) is a political party in the Philippines. It was formed in 1978, as an "umbrella" coalition of parties supporting then-President Ferdinand E. Marcos for the Interim Batasang Pambansa (National Assembly), and was his political vehicle during his rule, and reorganized as a Political Party in 1986.

There are no results available of the last elections for the House of Representatives, but according to the website of the House, the party holds 1 out of 237 seats (state of the parties, June 2007). The seat belongs to Rep. Imee Marcos of Ilocos Norte, who is the daughter of the former president. The party still enjoys great support in President Marcos' home province of Ilocos Norte, but retains little outside of it.

There has been confusion recently in the 2007 election campaign within the party. This confusion stems from the recent endorsement (allegedly by the KBL) of Marcos loyalist lawyer Oliver Lozano to dubious senatorial candidate Joselito Pepito "Peter" Cayetano, who was the namesake of Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano, an opposition stalwart. Rep. Cayetano said that Gov. Bongbong Marcos, who is the president of the KBL, has certified that Joselito Cayetano has no party affiliation whatsoever with the KBL and that no endorsement was called for his namesake's candidacy [2]. More recently, Marcos has denounced loyalist lawyer and senatorial candidate Oliver Lozano along with his candidates for turning the KBL into an "embarrassment". Marcos said that the party leadership will deal with the "renegade members" of the KBL after the elections [3].

[edit] 2007 Senatorial Slate

The KBL formed a full 7-man Senatorial slate for the May 14, 2007 Midterm Legislative and Local elections, as it became a full-fledged opposition party against the administration of President Gloria Arroyo. They ran against the administration-backed TEAM Unity and the main stream opposition slate, Genuine Opposition.

Name Party Occupation
Oliver Lozano Independent Marcos loyalist, lawyer, author of the First Impeachment Complaint against Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo also known as the Lozano Complaint
Melchor Chavez Independent Journalist and radio personality
Gen. Eduardo Orpilla (ret) KBL retired Philippine National Police officer and businessman
Ruben Enciso KBL journalist
Victor Wood KBL singer and entertainer best known during the 1970s
Antonio Estrella KBL lawyer
Joselito Pepito "Peter" Cayetano KBL engineer

KBL Senatorial Candidate Mujahib Hashim was disqualified by the COMELEC in its Resolution No. 7832 because his Certificate of Candidacy (COC) says: Habib "Boggs" Hashim and not Mujahib Hashim which meant that his COC is unsubscribed and unsworn therefore was disqualified and declared a nuisance candidate. On regards to Joselito Pepito "Peter" Cayetano, he is declared a nuisance candidate after the resolution made by the COMELEC on March 27, 2007 on the disqualification case (SPA 07-019) filed by Genuine Opposition Senatorial Candidate Taguig City-Pateros Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano. In the 14 May 2007 election, the party won 1 seats in the House[1].
