KCPO-LP, Channel 26 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and KCPL-LP, Channel 52 in Rapid City, South Dakota are a pair of simulcasting independent television stations that are operated by Central Plains Media that were formerly UPN affiliates. KCPO is available on cable channel 21 or 3 in the eastern half of South Dakota and many cable systems reaching viewers in Southwestern Minnesota, while KCPL is seen on cable channel 13 or 12 in the western half of the state.
Until February 2008, a third station, MyNetworkTV affiliate KCPM channel 27 in Grand Forks, North Dakota, simulcasted KCPO, though KCPM aired different programming at times and local commercial inserts. KCPM ceased operations in February 2008, and had filed notice to suspend operations in May 2008.
[edit] History
KCPO signed on the air for the first time in 1999 as a UPN and Bloomberg affiliate for Sioux Falls, South Dakota. KCPO launched a semi-satellite of KCPO, with the call sign KCPL-LP in Rapid City in 2004.
KCPO also airs many locally-produced programs, including a country music video program called That Country Video Show and a racing program called Talkin' Dirt. Both of these programs can also be seen on KCPL and KCPM.
In 2004, a digital-subchannel of KELO-TV, called "UTV", started broadcasting UPN to viewers in South Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska and Minnesota, and KCPO became an independent station. KCPL still aired UPN programming during primetime hours, and rebroadcasted KCPO with local inserts at all other times, until UPN's closure in September 2006 to form The CW, in which KCPL became a full-time simulcaster of KCPO.
Central Plains Media stations are owned and operated by "G.I.G, Inc", which stand for Guaranteed Impressions Group.
