Jorge Andrade (pron. IPA: ['ʒɔɾʒ(ɨ) ɐ̃'dɾad(ɨ)]), full name Jorge Manuel Almeida Gomes de Andrade, OIH, (born April 9, 1978) is a football defender, currently playing for Juventus FC.
[edit] Club career
Andrade debuted for his hometown club CF Estrela da Amadora in 1997, during their most successful season ever as they finished 7th in the first division. Andrade immediately caught the eye, and in 2000 was on the move north, to FC Porto. He was Porto’s most-used player in the 2001/02 Champions League, playing 12 times as the team reached the second group phase.
After Portugal’s unsuccessful 2002 World Cup campaign, Andrade was snapped up by then-big-spending Deportivo La Coruña in a move that cost the Galicians in excess of €12m.
On April 21, 2004, during a UEFA Champions League semi-finals match against former team Porto, Andrade was sent off by referee Markus Merk for a kick on Deco. The gesture was of a friendly nature, but Merk was eluded by it, and immediately sent Andrade off.[1] [2]
Andrade has been courted by numerous clubs on different occasions, including Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, Barcelona, Valencia and Inter Milan, but ended up signing for Juventus FC in summer 2007.[citation needed] In a match against AS Roma, Andrade badly tore a ligament and will likely be sidelined the entire 2007–08 season.[3]
Jorge Andrade, along with fellow Portuguese internationals Miguel, Nani and Nélson, is a descendant from the tiny Cape Verde islands. He visited his homeland in 2006 and did some work with grassroots football during his stay.
[edit] International career
Andrade made his debut for the national side in April 2001, and was part of the nation's squads at the 2002 World Cup and Euro 2004, scoring three goals in 50 caps as of July 2007.[4]
