Jalalpur is located at 25.85° N 79.82° E[1]. It has an average elevation of 118 metres (387 feet).

As of 2001 India census[2], Jalalpur had a population of 29,634. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Jalalpur has an average literacy rate of 69%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 73%, and female literacy is 64%. In Jalalpur, 16% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Jalalpur Town has several educational facilities such as Govt. Girls Inter College, Special Branch for Women higher education. The Narendra Dev Inter College is a very famous college of this area. There are many more Inter college in town such as Amar Gandhi Kanya Inter College, Jafaria Inter College. Another school is the Mirja Galib Inter college.

Jalalpur is famous for handloom weaving. Earlier most households had a hand loom installed in their houses. The common items woven were lungi (indian Sarong like wraparound) and gamcha ( thin towels). These used to be supplied to wholesale buyers in the township who would then send them to the markets in Calcutta. Now most of the hand looms have been replaced by power looms.

Jalalpur lies on the banks of the river Tons. There is a new bridge over the river now providing all weather transport.

Approximately 12 km away from Jalalpur to the east there is the very famous Dargah of Hazrat Meera Syed (rah.)in the Bhiyaon village.
