Iwata (磐田市 Iwata-shi?) is a city located in Shizuoka, Japan. The city was founded on April 1, 1948.In April 2005, it merged with the towns of Fukuda, Ryuyou, Toyoda, and Toyooka. The population is 172,863 as of May 1, 2008.The total area is 164.08 km².
The Yamaha corporation was founded in Iwata and maintains a strong presence in the city.
It is also home to Júbilo Iwata, a J. League soccer teams.
Its sister city is Mountain View, California, United States.
