Interstate Highways in Puerto Rico
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There are three officially designated Interstate Highways in Puerto Rico. As with Interstate Highways in Alaska and Hawaii, these routes do not connect to the United States Interstate Highway system, but still receive funding in a similar fashion to the Interstates in the contiguous US.
As with Interstate routes in Alaska (but not Hawaii), they are unsigned Interstate routes. The designated routes of the three routes — officially PR-1, PR-2 and PR-3 — run along various combinations of Puerto Rico routes. They do not follow the rules of even and odd numbers determining direction.
Puerto Rico's interstate highways are not entirely controlled-access. Normal speed limits are limited to 35 mph (60 km/h) to 50mph (80 km/h), with some parts of Interstate PR-2 featuring a 55mph speed limit. Puerto Rico's superhighways are the Autopistas, which are not funded by the Eisenhower Interstate System, but by a system of tolls. The Autopistas can feature speed limits up to 65mph. The Autopistas have replaced Puerto Rico's interstate highways for many portions as the primary highways in Puerto Rico. For example:
- Interstate PR-1 has been replaced by PR-52 and PR-18 for most of its length as the main highway from Ponce to San Juan. PR-1 is now mostly used as a scenic route and by people living nearby, it is also a great alternative for those who do not wish to pay the toll on PR-52.
- From Hatillo to San Juan, PR-2 is now mostly used as an alternate route to PR-22. Plans are underway to extend PR-22 to Aguadilla.
- In Carolina, Interstate PR-3 is now mostly used as an alternate route to PR-26. Additionally, the first half of PR-66 has replaced PRI-3 as the main route from Carolina to Canóvanas, and the second half of PR-66 will replace PR-3 as the main route from Canóvanas to Río Grande.
