N by accident and I don't know how to really improve it or whether it's an article that fits into Wikipedia at all. Naming convention for districts

Are there any naming conventions for districts and towns with the same name. Most districts in India has a town with the same name in it. For example there are two articles in wikipedia called Kottayam and Kottayam District. There is a lot of redundant information in these two pages. Is it necessary? I believe we should discuss and implement wikipedia guidelines for indian town and district articles. INCOTW Portal:India

The Indian Portal is this week's INCOTW. I have just made some changes to the layout and structure. The original color combination, I thought, was unappealing. I have added a color combination that symbolizes the country — I feel it is vibrant without being over-the-top gaudy. I have looked to the Australian Portal and War Portal for inspiration. If you would like to experiment with content and design, I have added a sandbox at User:AreJay/Portal. Please feel free to experiment. There is also a box-header template, for any modifications that you may want to make — User:AreJay/Portal/box-header. I will start working on reorganizing the layout of subpages. Wikiprojects helps bring standardization and structure to the articles that fall under those projects. Things you can do is much more diverse — it may be as simple as copyediting an article, adding a new article or removing POV from an article. They are fundamentally different. Colour

This might be my personal perception, but the new colour of the portal, and the high contrast between colours is not very soothing to the eyes. I don't like the contrast in Portal:Australia either, though I think it's still better, and I liked the previous colour of the India portal. That sentiment was actually echoed by other contributors as well, so I guess I will plan on changing it soon. Just as a thought, what colors would go well on this page? Are we sticking with colors that are identified with India (saffron, white, green) or will other colors be something that we should explore. I'd like to hear your thoughts on that. Thanks! Nominate already?

I was wondering if it would be a good idea to nominate the portal already for featured status. It's already looking comparable to featured portals, and since it is COTW, we would be able to quickly work on any comments/suggestions, so that all issues could be resolved by the end of the week. deeptrivia (talk) 04:45, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

The portal is in fiarly good shape currently. There arejust some minor issues that need to be dealt with (eg. The absurd specific cats in the categories section, like Indian Antartic Program!). Maybe a INCOTW section can be added on the right to balance up the columns. It would also be good if there was somthing "unique" about the Indian Portal. DaGizzaChat © 06:54, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

It's in good shape, however there is still a lot of "cleanup" type issues that we have to work through. The Noticeboard that links directly from the portal needs to be cleaned up and consolidated. There's information overflow in the newsboard and I feel it should be organized in a more user-friendly format. I went ahead yesterday and consolidated the "Collaborate" and "Members" section. Maybe we should expand on the "Conventions" (perhaps rename it to "Policies"?) and make it more readable so that new members reading the page are not overwhelmed with information. Lead text

I think the lead text should be expanded to fill up the empty space. I was trying to do it myself, but probably I'm not very skillful in summarising. We should mention in the lead some more cultural stuff, for example, about the thousands of languages we have in India. I remember the India article of Dorling Kindersley's Children's Illustrated Encyclopedia starts with the line "A traveller in India would need to learn more than 1500 languages to communicate with everyone" (or something like that.) deeptrivia (talk) 15:55, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

The portal looks great and so does the news column. Someone who is regularly updating the news and current affairs may put important events such as India-US deal and Hutch Cup victory can put them on WP:ITN so that important news from India can make it to the main page as well, not just the portal. --Gurubrahma 05:53, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

Can portals be peer reviewed? If not, can we conduct an informal review here and invite people to share their thoughts on what other changes, if any, are needed before we push this portal for featured status? Related Portals

It would be good if this section was added. It can include the portals of neghbouring countries, Asia and Kerala (as well as other Indian states once they are created). But currently the columns are evenly balanced so I don't know where to added such a section. It would make the portal one step closer to FA status. Please write your comments below. wrt the portal links, is it necessary to link to the Buddhism, Islam and Christianity portals if they are not India-specific? In other words, Christianity in India and Islam in India (portals that probably don't exist) could probably be linked here...I'm just not so sure about the general portals. The same deal with Cricket. I don't know much about the game, but I'm assuming that the portal deals with world Cricket and that the game's fans are all over the world. Buddhism originated from India even though not that many people follow the relgion any more in India. Islam has had a massive influence on India's history and current affairs (the Taj Mahal is an example of Muslim architecture). Roughly 10-15% of India are Muslims and the figure is rising dramatically (because of their high birth rates comparative to others and because of conversions). Similarly so with Christianity but to a lesser extent.
Pakistan, China and Bangladesh are all neighbouring countries of India. Pakistan and Bangladesh especially, despite the relgious differences, share the same culture and histry as India as well as speaking similar languages.
Cricket is the de facto national sport of India. In addition, more than half of the revenue for world cricket is supplied from India. The BCCI have huge control over the game internationally. Perhaps you don't know too much about the game because you are an NRI in the United States. It definitely impacts greatly on India though, even on international relations. India and Pakistan have become much more friendly and less likely to nuke each other after India toured Pakistan a couple of years ago. GizzaChat © 01:27, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

I think we should have only the portals of Indian states and cities (and perhaps the Asia portal) under it. Yes, I agree with Deepujoseph. The present logic makes for a very subjective inclusion of portals to this list. Unless these portals are India-specific (such as an Indian-Islam portal or an Indian-Christianity portal), I don't see any reason to include general portals — I think we'll just be stirring up a hornet's nest with that. I seperated Hyderabad and Kerala from Geography, as they cannot be put into the same category as India's neighbours (they are part of India; Pak, China and Bangladesh are not). I think it's a good move to link to portals for the other states and I think some states (Punjab and Maharashtra especially) should get portals seeing as there is a wealth of information based on them. I think cricket's alright, but to justify it Hockey might as well be added, seeing as that is the national sport. Don't think there's any need to link to the portals of our neighbours, China especially, seeing as we have very little to do with them (culturally). In the religious section, I think we should keep it to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist (the 4 major world religions founded in India) and perhaps Islam. But minor religions (in India anyway) like Christianity, Shinto, Taoism etc. might as well be removed. Nobleeagle 03:16, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

Well, I think it makes sense having them. The maintainers of these portals also linked them to this English portal, and all other "pure" Indian portals have also cross-linked with these portals. For many people this "technical" difference doesn't matter much. Looking at it from a perspective of being informative and helpful rather than being 100% exact, I think it's okay to keep. Considering that these nice portals exist in French and Swedish (French portal is featured), it would also be a bad idea to start a new portal in French just for Republic of India. Since that's not going to be done, fr:Portail:Monde indien is the closest we can get, and I think it's close enough. IMO Shyam Bihari (talk · contribs) is on a vacation. We should update the Indian SA list regularly. Its becoming sort of boring with just a handful article being reappearing repeatedly. There are quite a few articles already. In fact, some SAs qualify for SARC, like Delhi, whereas some articles need immediate promotion as SA, for example, Indian cricket team. FAs like Lothal, Malwa, Bangalore, Rabindranath Tagore have never appeared in the portal:India!! The whole thing is in a mess.--Dwaipayan (talk) 18:16, 2 May 2006 (UTC)
I had voiced my discomfort at having a "Today's Selected Article" section in the first place. I have always felt the turnover should be bimonthly or monthly. The trouble we have here is that a) there's not enough good articles to be featured on the portal. We have approximately 30 FAs and a few good articles, but at the rate we're going we'll be out of FAs in a month, and b) who is going to update and maintain that section every day? I am going to update the list with new articles, for the next few days, but I think there should be a push towards making this thing monthly. I would also suggest that we evaluate articles against the Version 1.0 assessment (which itself needs updating). Also India-related Wikipedia FAs should warrant an automatic inclusion in WP:PIN's SA list. Please comment. AreJay 18:45, 2 May 2006 (UTC)

I did some update of Version 1.0 assessment a few days back. IMO, all India related FAs (32 total) are listed. However, I could not list all GAs under A-class. Please see. Some veteran A-class articles like K. M. Nanavati vs. State of Maharashtra should be there in India SA list. You are correct, AreJay, that we do not have enough FAs. So some A-class and some B-class articles can be included in India SA list. And also some A-class ones need to be put for nomination of GA. imo, the selected article in portal:India should be, at least, a weekly affair, and not daily. Otherwise, it becomes too recurring. And articles like C programming language, GNU/Linux naming controversy, Java programming language though universal in their appeal, are not exactly Indian articles. may be some Indian wikipedians did major contribution in those articles. If that's the reason of their inclusion to India SA list, even then it does not sound rational, because ,"The Selected Articles are what we believe to be the best articles in Wikipedia related to India. The entire system is bungled since Shyam is on vacation, how long does one have to wait before an article is promoted (when no objections have been made in quite a while) and how long does one have to wait before an article is removed (because stuff like Mozilla Firefox, Dinosaur and Graffiti better be removed quick). I would say this — per our Version 1.0 assessment, if we have an FA or an A-class article it can be automatically promoted to SA. SAC should be reserved for B-class articles and below (although realistically, if an article is of a quality that wouldn't allow it to be classified as even B-class, it probably should merit an SA inclusion). I have made some changes to the stream yesterday — you are not going to see the likes of Firefox or Dinosaur again. Shyam is on a vacation it appears; in the interim, I volunteer to take up that responsibility. However, I will be travelling overseas late May-mid June and may need someone to fill my shoes at that point in time. I'd encourage everyone to continue to QA articles and update our list of A-class and B-class articles based on Version 1.0 assessment; I will update the stream based on your input. Comments? Totally agree with AreJay. FA and A class articles should be added in India SA list. However, one concern is A class article listing is difficult. For the time being, all already listed A-class should be adde to SA list. Later, other non A class should also be considered. For that, there is the SAC procedure. Please go ahead, AreJay. FA get instant SA and new A Class Articles have to go through the SAC procedure (as they have under most conditions not gone through such a procedure yet). Well, that's a tough question. Neither GA and A-class articles necessarily go through any review process. Often people may be prompted to make some article GA or A-class impulsively. For the time being, those India related A-class articles which have gone through peer review and also are excellent(again some personal view ponts come into play!) may be added to India SA list. For example, K.R.Narayanan. Let's do one thing for the sake of procedural clarity.
Afrer all those India SAs facing SARC are removed, let's nominate all India A-class for SAC. Most should pass quickly(one or two may be opposed - I do not know). Then we shall have all India FAs and India A-classes as India SA. That will be around 45 articles. Next, there are some articles already in SAC (like Satyajit Ray, Tanilnadu) which have not been classified as A-class. We should put those for SAC. Afrer that, we will be left with B-class and unclassified. With about 50 SAs, we can go on through the normal SAC then, as usual. So, the first job is to remove those peculiar articles from SA list. Some administrators may help. I have already contacted Sundar (talk · contribs). Then should nominate all A-classes foe SAC. Please comment.--Dwaipayan (talk) 19:40, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

Process to QA selected articles

Here's what I feel should realistically happen to ensure the quality of articles that are being featured.

  1. Remove all non-FA articles from WP:PINSA
  2. Use our Version 1.0 assessment as the authentic source to determine what articles can or cannot be featured
  3. A-class articles can be nominated for consideration to be accepted as SA. A consensus, similar to the one in the WP:FAC process must be reached before promoting articles to SA.
  4. In short, every single article present in WP:PINSA must have been nominated and have had some sort of consensus reached around the quality of the article (FAC or SAC) for it be a Portal India Selected Article.

If this process is acceptable, the first step is to remove every non-FA article from the SA stream (I volunteer to work on this). This will mean that we have a smaller pool to choose from for our Today's Selected Article stream until we come up with a large enough pool of SAs to be able to feature a unique article every day, but I am willing to accept that inconvenience over having to see articles like Cheese (which I am very fond of) and Coca-Cola (which I drink more than water, living as I am in a city that is the corporate headquarters for Coke) appear on our portal. Agree. I agree with AreJay that this process would be most acceptable. Some A-class articles are there in SA list. Those should be delisted too. And all articles should go through selection ptocedure. Please go ahead. IMO, we have already lost a lot of time discussing all these things. Just remove all except FAs (around 30). Its better to have less number of quality articles than more number of junks. And the India SA article that appears everyday in portal: India, the frequency can be decreased if needed, say, weekly SA, until we get many more SAs. Uniformity

I think we need to unify all the Portal:India/Selected articles related pages and procedures. Postage stamp

I have uploaded a scanned image of a postage stamp issued by the Government of India. Its a commemorative stamp issued in 1997. Does anyone have any idea whether this is infringing some copyrights etc? If so, I will remove the stamp. ramit 10:12, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

Page is broken

Hello, can someone fix the Indian portal page?? I am not really sure how the template works. Their is white space on right of Todays selected article and bunch of other sections seem to be somehow screwed up. It has been like this for atleast four-five days. --Blacksun 01:12, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

Hardcoded Selected article and Selected picture

Because of maintenance issues, I have hardcoded the Selected article and Selected picture sections of the portal. This means that both sections need to be manually changed from now on. I consider this to be a temporary fix; I suggest we move in the direction of featuring one article and one picture per month. I think we were biting off more than we could chew with featuring a new article every day. First, we don't have enough India-related articles to feature a new one every day and second, maintaining the stream has become a problem. I volunteer to create the monthly streams for the Selected article/Selected picture sections, although this may have to wait until mid-June since I'm going on vacation to India next week. Other volunteers can feel free to push through with creating this stream, if consensus can be reached. AreJay 02:18, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

If we can rotate previous "Selected Articles", then we can keep the SA changing everyday and in the meanwhile we can prepare TSA summary for newly selected articles. I don't think this would be difficult as it just requires copying the TSA summary from previous Selected Articles. We have around 15~20 articles in this and we can afford to repeat them once every fortnight rather than show the same every day. I can volunteer to create the TSA summaries from previous TSAs and maintain them to atleast the week ahead. If this is acceptable then I will start working on it. As regards to the Selected Picture, I think we better stick to one picture per week. To have Selected Article everyday, we'll need a volunteer who will change it everyday. That may not be possible. If ambuj is ready to volunteer, however, we can keep the daily rotation going. Advance selecting and automatic changing was already there and was handled by User:Shyam Bihari. However, after he went on a break, nobody took the responsibility of selecting summaries for future articles and even I realized that after I saw on the portal that "Today's article hasn't been selected yet". I decided to handle the things myself then onwards and created a few temporary articles for the upcoming days. In the meanwhile, AreJay also noted the problem and decided to hardwire the Selected Article. I am willing to do the selecting part and just request you all to keep a watch that future selected articles have been selected atleast 5 days in advance (just in case I forget or go to wikibreak). Failing this, you may either hardwire the articles again or take up the work temporarily. Anniversary/On this day section for Portal:India

I was thinking of starting a section for anniversaries of notable events, births and deaths related to India for the Portal:India, similar to Portal:Germany and Portal:Germany/Anniversaries. If there is consensus and enough events can be found, it could be placed on the portal, and would be automatically updated by a reference from the portal using a similar template to that on the German portal, and so would not require human updates daily.Blnguyen | Have your say!!! 06:10, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

A new page under Portal:India

I went ahead to create the Selected Content Page in order to speedy up things while choosing the daily selected articles. Now, under it, each Selected Article/Selected Picture Summary is a sub-page so that all we need to do is to substitute (or just include) the sub-page on the Today's Selected Article Page. Please comment on this system and should I start using it from now on. Need for Page Moves

As explained in my previous thread (A new page under Portal:India), I have started the page on selected content summaries. However there is one problem with the current system. As of now, both the summaries of Selected Articles and Pictures appear as sub-page of "/Selected article". While this does not create any operational problems, the fundamental structure is wrong. This happened as first I thought of creating SA summary pages under "/Selected article" and SP summary under "/Selected pictures". However midway through the implementation I thought having a common repository for both will be better. A lapse of concentration meant that the page was created under "/Selected article" instead of directly under Portal:India. As I had already created a couple of dozen pages under it before I realized the problem, I decided to go ahead with the current scheme. However, I now feel that it is necessary to use the technically correct heirarchy for clearer understanding also as others, besides me, should also understand it clearly. Hence, I propose to move the Portal:India/Selected articles/SC Summary page and all subpages to one level up, directly under Portal:India. In the news section

I find that the news section of the portal only mentions breaking news. This translates to only a couple of news for the whole month. Shouldn't we "dilute" our standards to include everyday news (like President's trip to J&K, etc.) to make the portal more dynamic? On another note, I find it odd that WP:WIAFPo says "Any featured portal that requires maintenance and that is not updated for three or more months will be summarily demoted." Isn't three months a little too much a time to go before updates need to be done? A few days back Gurubrahma expressed his concern over slow updating of news and DYK, which seems a valid concern as to how should we maintain the portal.
