[edit] Game Play
[edit] Basics
The game utilizes a unique system of play that is radically different that most other fighters. The graphics feature the standard 2-D sprites in a three dimensional world. Although each battle begins on the ground, the majority of the action is featured skyward. The player's movement controls are very different than those of other games as towards and away are used by different buttons on the joypad. Attacks for the most part are mêlées of rapid punches and kicks. Players can also fire ki blasts at their opponent ether singularly or rapidly by holding the assigned button for a short period. The player progress will be determined by how much ki they have in their ki meter under their life meter, thus all attacks will consume various amounts of ki. If the player uses all of their available ki their character will stop fighting out of exhaustion leaving them wide open for an attack. Players can keep their ki built up by powering up at anytime during gameplay.
[edit] Power Balance
Carried over from Idainaru Goku Densetsu, this system acts as a scale that helps to determine how well the player is performing and is the only means of winning a battle. This is setup as a bar at the bottom of the screen that features both players colors, blue for player one, and red for player two. As the player attacks, their half increases until they have tipped the scale and prompted a Meteo Attack.
[edit] Connects
Connects are simply a technique where during a mêlée, the player delivers a single blow that sends their opponent flying in the any direction and the player catches them in mid flight and resumes the mêlée. The player can perform this as long as their ki meter holds up. One of the objectives within each episode is rack up a given amount of connects within gameplay. If the player goes over the set score, the connects will become "HiConnects".
[edit] Meteo Attacks
When the player consumes the power balance, all gameplay stops and the character the player controls at that moment powers up perform a meteo attack. These are basically the character's signature techniques and are the only means of depleting their opponent's life meter. Each character's meteo attacks vary from ether port of the game.
[edit] Sideline
A exclusive feature within Z campaign that allows the player stop play to let the computer take over. When players enter this mode various characters that are associated with that event appear on ether side of the screen whether they be the actual playable characters or other character associated with that saga. As the computer plays out the characters will deliver random commentary according to the battle. However this will not always insure victory for the player.

[edit] Ports
The game received ports on both Sega Saturn and PlayStation consoles, these ports each have their own unique cover art with Goku centered. Both releases faired enough in sales to be reissued with their best seller labels, "Segasaturn Collection" and "PlayStation the Best for Family" a year later. A Nintendo 64 port was planned but was not produced for unknown reasons. In parts of Europe the Saturn version would get ported under the title "Dragon Ball Z: The Legend". In the US, neither version was released commercially, but rumors persisted that Atari would release the PlayStation version along with Ultimate Battle 22 and the reprint of Final Bout, but this did not come to pass. However, both versions would see US shores through various methods importing. The PlayStation version along with Japanese Ultimate Battle 22 and Final Bout can currently as of this writing be purchased at various specialty stores online. In 1998 copies of the Saturn version's "Segasaturn Collection" edition were available for sale at Electronics Boutique (currently EB Games) along with other imported Japanese Saturn titles such as X-Men vs. Street Fighter and "Ultraman: Hikari no Kyojin Densetsu". As part of an attempt to boost sales on the dying Saturn by selling imported games, as US distributors had quit release titles for the console.
