Hillerød is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in Region Hovedstaden ("Capital Region"). The municipality covers an area of 191 km² (74 sq. miles), and has a total population of 46,568 (2008). The mayor of the municipality is Kirsten Jensen, a member of the Social Democrats (Socialdemokraterne) political party.

The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town also named as Hillerød. The city of Hillerød also houses the administrative capital of Region Hovedstaden.

Neighboring municipalities are Fredensborg municipality to the east, Gribskov municipality to the north, Frederiksværk-Hundested municipality to the west, and Frederikssund and Allerød to the south.

On January 1, 2007, Hillerød municipality was merged with Skævinge municipality, as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007), forming the new Hillerød municipality.

The best known monument is Frederiksborg Castle, which for a long time was the seat of the Danish kings. The castle is open to the public and houses the Frederiksborg Museum/The Museum of National History. It is also surrounded by a large baroque garden.

The Town Museum ("Bymuseet") contains a permanent exhibition regarding the history of Hillerød.

"The Boiler Room" ("Kedelhuset") has changing special exhibits. In 2005 regarding the ancient and medieval history of Northern Zealand.

"Æbelholt Klosterruin" (The ruins of Æbelholt monastery) is a site that containing the ruins of the largest monastery in the northern countries that belonged to the Roman Catholic monastic order, The Augustinians. The site also contains a museum showing its history. The monastery was founded in 1175 by a French Augustininian, Guillaume or Vilhelm. He was summoned to the task by the Danish archbishop and statesman Absalon. After the Reformation in 1536 in Denmark the monastery lands were appropriated by the state and the buildings were torn down. Some of the brickwork was later used in the construction of Frederiksborg Castle.

Esrum Abbey ("Esrum Kloster") is a Cistercian monastery dating from 1151. The only remaining building of this once vast complex now houses a permanent exhibition about the Cistercians. There is a restaurant in the vaults. Next to the monastery is "Esrum Møllegaard", a Nature and Environmental Centre of ecology.

Hillerød is surrounded by some of the most extensive woodlands in Denmark, with Store Dyrehave to the south and the forests of Gribskov to the north. Gribskov is the second largest forest in the country, and is home to one of the largest lakes in Denmark, Esrum Sø. Fredensborg Palace Garden are next to Grib skov and Esrum Sø. These forests are rich with wild game such as deer.

Hillerød has one of the highest crime rates in northern Zealand.

Situated in Hillerød, The Danish College of Pharmacy Practice (Danish: Farmakonomskolen Pharmakon) is a higher tertiary educational institution of pharmaceutical sciences with 602 pharmaconomist students.
