[edit] Plot

Ben Reynolds (Cayden Boyd) (who narrates the story) lives with neglecting parents: a bisexual mom who is, as Ben states, "obsessed with movies in a way that defies all explanation." (Lara Flynn Boyle) and a dad (Matthew Modine) who completely ignores him. He is too obsessed with his boat. One rainy night, Ben's parents take in a girl about Ben's age named Cassie Kennington (AnnaSophia Robb) who is the only survivor of a car wreck that killed her parents. Ben's parents agree to let Cassie stay with them until she can move into her grandmother's house. Cassie instead encourages Ben to run away with her and live with her aunt (Heather Graham) and uncle (Dylan McDermott), who live in Baltimore. Their first stop is at a pig farm run by Henderson (Val Kilmer) and a small wedding ceremony for Ben and Cassie takes place.

They both get back on the road, but when they stop for a break, a police car pulls up. Cassie quickly lies about why they are out there alone, saying that the station wagon parked near them is their father's and that he has a bladder infection. Needless to say, this has no effect whatsoever, so Ben and Cassie are taken to the police station. It seems that they would spend the night in jail when Cassie fakes a seizure in her cell. The policeman watching her believes it, and unwittingly lets Ben out of his cell to look at her. Ben then pushes the guard into Cassie's now empty cell, and locks the door. They both get away successfully and continue their journey.

They then hitch a ride on a bus full of hippies, which take them as far as Kentucky. Cassie meets a young man named Jack (who is the one that suggested they get on the bus) and talks with him, which leads Ben to question their conversation("We're married, you know! That's supposed to count for something!"). Cassie says smugly that Ben is jealous. This, of course, is true.

In Virginia, Cassie's arm begins to throb and Ben looks at it ("Jesus, Cass!") and calls a doctor. They are very nearly caught here, but due to Ben's timing and acting ability, they manage to escape without being questioned too much.

They successfully make to Baltimore, where Cassie's aunt and uncle welcome the two into their home. However, Cassie's mood seems to have changed after they get to Baltimore, for she suddenly secludes herself more often and has a very negative attitude, even toward Ben. It is also noted that her nightmares come up more frequently, and moans or screams during these, often with Ben rubbing her back or patiently waiting until she wakes. Ben begins to fret about Cassie, and it leads to a fight between the two. Cassie quickly apologizes soon afterward, telling him that she told Ben she was flawed when they met.

Sure enough, something happens to Cassie when they are in the living room dancing. Cassie crashes to the floor after struggling from her uncle's arms, screaming. She curls up, hides her face, and begins to cry. Her uncle, aunt, and Ben all gather around her, Ben crying too.

Cassie's demons have begun to resurface, allegedly being psychological trauma. She is taken to the hospital, and the saddest part of all is that Cassie is unable to look away from Ben until the doctor escorting her has led her into another room. Ben is sent to a military school, and Cassie is sentenced to 18 months in a high risk observation room. Ben runs away from the school and visits her in the hospital. Ben tells her that it's time to leave. Cassie, however, is extremely tired, and falls asleep with Ben's arms protectively around her. But Cassie has yet another nightmare, which she can't seem to rid herself of even when Ben is with her. She is still reliving her horror in her past, and this has brought her to the brink of tears. Ben repeats that it's time to leave. At first, Cassie says no ("Ben, I'm sick. When you kill two people it makes you sick."), but Ben doesn't take no for an answer. He tells her he is taking her out of there and to worry about everything else later. She agrees and they escape.

Ben narrates afterward that before he and Cassie could start their lives together, he must get a few things done first. So he burns down his mother's only movie theater and crashes his father's boat as an act of anger that they loved these things more than him. As Ben's parents grieve for their lost things, Ben and Cassie watch from the top of the truck, arms around each other. They, of course, go unnoticed.

The movie then cuts to Ben and Cassie's lives as they get older, with Ben's child voice still narrating his and Cassie's future. When they are adults, Cassie becomes an editor for children's stories and Ben plays major baseball till his arm gives out, after which he becomes a writer. They eventually get married for real and have two kids, whose names are unknown at this point. The movie ends with Ben and Cassie walking on the beach, then Ben walking alone on the beach, which signals that Cassie has died, presumably of old age.
