Coordinates: 24°39′N 77°19′E / 24.65, 77.32 Guna is a city and a municipality in Guna district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It is the administrative headquarters of Guna District and is located on the banks of Parbati river.

Guna was part of the ancient Avanti Kingdom founded by Chand Pradyota Mahesena. Later Shishusangh added the kingdom of Avant, which included Guna to the growing empire of Magadha.

In the early 18th century, Guna was conquered by the Maratha leader Ramoji Rao Scindia, and remained part of the Kingdom of Gwalior until shortly after Indian independence. Guna was administered as part of the kingdom's Isagarh District. In 1897 the Indian Midland Railway constructed a rail route passing through Guna.

After India gained independence, Guna became part of the new state of Madhya Bharat on 28 May 1948 as one of its 16 districts. On November 1, 1956, Madhya Bharat was merged into Madhya Pradesh state.

Jaypee Institute of Engineering and Technology (JIET) is a constituent center of Jaypee University of Information Technology (JUIT), Himachal Pradesh (set up by Act No. 14 of 2002 vide Extraordinary Gazette notification, Govt. of HP dated May 23, 2002 and approved by the University Grants Commission under section 2(f) of the UGC act). This is one of the three institutions of higher learning in the field of Degree level Engineering education established under the Jaiprakash Sewa Sansthan (JSS) educational initiative which recognizes the role of IT and emerging technologies in improving the quality of life of the people of India. The JIET campus on the national highway linking Agra to Mumbai is being developed on a 100 acre as modern institution of higher learning in the field of engineering and technology education. The foundation stone of this institution was laid on 15th March 2002 by the then chief minister of Madhya Pradesh Shri Digvijay Singh. The complex is being built on a well thought out "Seven Phase" plan to make it a self sufficient, vibrant modern center of excellence with the mission of providing an excellent quality of Undergraduate and Postgraduate education, with a strong emphasis on research and innovation and close interaction with the industry. It aims to produce professionals who can be leaders in innovation, entrepreneurship , creativity and management. The first academic activities of JIET started in the year 2003. Presently the institute offers 4 year (8 semester) B.Tech Programmes, M.Tech. (By Research) Programmes, M.Tech. Guna is located at 24.65° N 77.32° E[1]. It has an average elevation of 474 metres (1555 feet).

Guna district of Madhya Pradesh is the gateway of Malwa and Chambal. It is located on the north-eastern part of Malwa Plateau. Western boundary of the District is well defined by Parbati river. Parbati is the main river flowing along the western boundary touching Rajgarh District of Madhya Pradesh, and Jhalawarh and Kota Districts of Rajasthan. Towns Shivpuri and Kota are located in north and the cities Vidisha, Bhopal, and Rajgarh lie to the South.

As of 2001 India census[2], Guna had a population of 137,132. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Guna has an average literacy rate of 67%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 75%, and female literacy is 57%. In Guna, 15% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Digvijay Singh, Ex. Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh belongs to Guna.He is popularly known as "Diggi Raja"

Jyotiraditya Scindia, belonging to Congress(I) party, is a Member of Parliament from Guna.
