[edit] Origin and recording

The song's lyrics were written by lead singer Eddie Vedder while the song's music was co-written by guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament.

Stone Gossard on the song:

That's probably my favorite song on the album, because of its simplicity and it's arrangement. The way that song came together was really cool. I had the verse and the chorus, and the bridge evolved from a jam with Jeff (Ament, the band's bassist).[1]

[edit] Lyrical meaning

The 'garden of stone' referred to in the song is believed by some to mean a cemetery. With this in mind, the song's lyrics suggest an influence of William Blake's poem "The Garden of Love".

[edit] Live performances

The song was premiered live at the band's February 7, 1991 concert in Los Angeles, California.[2] The song was played live from its debut in 1991 up until 1995 when it was dropped. The song returned to set lists for the band's 2000 tour before being dropped again.[2] Most recently, the song was re-worked for the band's 2006 tour. The re-working consisted of placing the first chorus after the second verse and removing the soft intro, replacing it with the chorus guitar part. Live performances of "Garden" can be found on the "Dissident"/Live in Atlanta box set and the Live at the Gorge 05/06 box set.
