FX is a TV channel in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland, owned by Fox, launched in 12 January 2004 and originally branded as FX289 in reference to its Sky Digital EPG number. The channel was moved to 270 in May 2005, and dropped the 289 part of its name. It has moved twice subsequently; first, in February 2006, the channel moved to 179, then it relocated to 165 in May 2007. It is now also available on the Virgin Media cable network and Tiscali TV IPTV. It was the third Fox-branded channel for the UK, after Fox News Channel and Fox Kids (later Jetix).

The target ages is those aged 25 to 44. It has a similar format to its American sister channel FX Networks, with a schedule consisting largely of Fox-produced shows, including comedy such as Family Guy and King of the Hill, and dramas such as The Shield, The X Files, NCIS and NYPD Blue. Non-Fox-produced shows rerun or receiving their UK premier on the channel include Carnivàle, Highlander, JAG, NCIS, Sleeper Cell, E-Ring and Huff . FX broadcasts a timeshift service, FX+. Unlike most UK timeshift services, which shift the channel by one hour, FX+ is shifted by two hours. This is because FX's schedule "revolves around two hour blocks of ... programming between 9pm and 11pm on weeknights".[1]

For several weeks starting on the 5 December 2005, FX carried a strand of programming from the Fox-owned American channel FUEL TV. The strand was identified as "FX Presents FUEL TV", and made use of FUEL TV's US branding graphics. The strand ran for an hour from 10am, and was repeated in the early hours of the following morning.[2]

A second timeshift service, FX +1, launched on Sky on 10 December 2007. The branding of sister timeshift channel FX + had not been changed to reflect this, causing confusion due to the two being very similar in name (FX +, FX +1) with viewers assuming a mistake or a double-over of the channel, a suitable way to have addressed this would be have been to rebrand the original timeshift as FX +2 and trade location in EPG with sister channel FX +1, though nothing had been announced. On Monday 28th April 2008, FX +1 ceased broadcasting on Sky 205 and its slot was replaced with FX HD.

[edit] FX HD

FX HD is a high definition television channel, which launched on Monday 28th April 2008 at 10pm in the UK and Ireland. FX HD broadcasts a completely separate schedule from the standard definition channel. The HD station broadcasts between 7pm and 2am every day, and has been specially created for the Sky HD service. FX HD was originally due to launch on 21st April, but as stated on the FX Forums, the reason why the date has been pushed back to 28th April 2008 was down to "technical difficulties at the transmission end" More information here. and here

At launch it contained around 90% HD content and will have, in the early months at least, no commercial breaks.
