[edit] Origin and recording

The song pairs lyrics written by lead singer Eddie Vedder with music written by guitarist Mike McCready. It is one of three songs on the album for which McCready receives the sole musical writing credit.

Mike McCready said he came up with the guitar riff after being stuck in his condo on a snowy day in Seattle.[1] Mike McCready on the song:

When I bring a song to the band, I just say, 'These are my basic ideas,' and I leave them open to interpretation. I'm never, like, 'They have to be this way.' If Ed has an idea to change it around, like in "Faithfull" -- that song was written differently. It was written as a progression of light, heavier, to heavy. And where it is now, it's light, heavy, heavier, less heavy and then light again, so Ed made kind of a triangle out of it.[1]

[edit] Reception

In his review of Yield, Rob Sheffield of Rolling Stone magazine said, "The amazing "Faithfull" begins as a fairly conventional critique of religion and turns into passionate testifying about a marriage."[2]

[edit] Lyrical meaning

The song features an anthem-like chorus in which Vedder proclaims, "We're faithful, we all believe, we all believe it." When asked about the song in an interview, lead singer Eddie Vedder stated, "'Faithfull' is a myth."[3] When introducing the song at Pearl Jam's June 27, 1998 concert in East Troy, Wisconsin, Vedder said it is "a song about being careful with your trust."[4]

[edit] Live performances

The song was premiered live at the band's February 20, 1998 concert in Maui, Hawaii.[5] Performances of "Faithfull" can be found on the DVDs Single Video Theory and Live at the Garden.
