[edit] Demographics
As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 14,823 people, 4,831 households, and 3,787 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 4,597.8 people per square mile (1,777.4/km²). There were 5,064 housing units at an average density of 1,570.7/sq mi (607.2/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 80.04% White, 1.54% Black or African American, 1.42% Native American, 1.04% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 11.89% from other races, and 3.99% from two or more races. 24.91% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 4,831 households out of which 42.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.7% were married couples living together, 15.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.6% were non-families. 17.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.03 and the average family size was 3.38.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 32.8% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 26.1% from 25 to 44, 19.8% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 94.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.5 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $39,828, and the median income for a family was $42,356. Males had a median income of $34,500 versus $24,493 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $15,486. About 13.4% of families and 17.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.4% of those under age 18 and 8.0% of those age 65 or over.

In the state legislature East Hemet is located in the 37th Senate District, represented by Republican Jim Battin, and in the 65th Assembly District, represented by Republican Paul Cook. Federally, East Hemet is located in California's 45th congressional district, which has a Cook PVI of R +3[3] and is represented by Republican Mary Bono Mack.
