From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dublin Rathmines West was a short-lived former parliamentary constituency represented in Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament or Oireachtas. It covered the western part of the Rathmines district of Dublin. It existed from 1977 to 1981. It elected three Teachtaí Dála (TDs) to the Dáil, using the Single Transferable Vote method of proportional representation (PR-STV).

[edit] History

The constituency was created in 1977, under the Electoral (Amendment) Act 1974 [1], largely replacing the former Dublin South Central constituency, as part of the redistribution of constituencies (also known as the Tullymander) which attempted to secure the re-election of the outgoing Fine Gael/Labour government. The constituency was abolished in 1981 being mostly replaced with the Dublin South Central constituency although a smaller part went to Dublin South East constituency.

It's election was also notable for representing the first time that the future Irish president, Mary Robinson stood for the Dáil although she was unsuccessful.

[edit] Boundaries

It consisted of the following wards of the county borough of Dublin [2]: Crumlin D, Kimmage A, Kimmage B, Kimmage C, Kimmage D, Kimmage E, Rathfarnham A, Rathmines West A, Rathmines West B, Rathmines West D, Rathmines West E, Rathmines West F, Terenure A, Terenure B, Terenure C.
