DSB class MZ was a series of 61 diesel-electric locomotives operated by Danske Statsbaner. They were built by NOHAB with parts from Thrige-Titan and Frichs on licence from General Motors Electro-Motive Diesel between 1967 and 1978. There were four series of the of the locomotive built, designated I - IV.

Some IV-series remain in service with Railion in Denmark, after being sold in 2001 from DSB. In Sweden the locos have received the designation TMZ and are used by Svensk Tågteknik, Vida, TÅGAB, TGOJ, Inlandsgods as well as BaneService and Jernbaneverket of Norway and Lachlan Valley Rail Freight of Australia.

[edit] Variations

MZ I was built in ten copies from 1967-69, each costing DKK 2.4 million. One is kept by DSB Museum, while the rest have been sold to various Swedish operators.

MZ II was built in 16 copies in 1970. It has the same appearance and many of the same characteristics as the I-series. Most locomotives have been sold to various Swedish operators.

MZ III was built in 20 copies from 1972-74. It has a slightly different appearance and was equipped with more powerful engines and higher top speed. I can thus pull 1,800 tonne trains (opposed to 1,600 tonne trains). Two units have been sold to Comsa in Spain, 16 have been sold to Independent Rail (former LVRF) in Australia. One of the remaining two have recently been sold to the danish operator Contec.

MZ IV was built in 15 copies from 1977-78. It has the same performance as III, but a slightly different appearance. Two have been sold to TÅGAB of Sweden, the rest remain in service with Railion in Denmark.
