[edit] Background
The Canadian Championship is a seasonal club football competition organized by CONCACAF and the CSA. The inaugural tournament will begin play in May 2008 and end in July of 2008. Participating teams will be Montreal Impact, Toronto FC and Vancouver Whitecaps. The tournament will consist of a home and away series between each team. The winner of the tournament will gain entry into the qualifying round of the CONCACAF Champions League 2008-09.[3] [4] [5]
Originally the tournament had been planned among representatives from the Montreal Impact, Toronto FC, and the Vancouver Whitecaps as a friendly competition. Only after the new format for the CONCACAF Champions League was announced did the upcoming tournament gain importance.
With the establishment of the Canadian Championship, the Open Canada Cup, a nascent attempt at a tournament along the lines of the English FA Cup, has been suspended temporarily.
[edit] Format
The tournament features the top three professional teams in Canada in a home and away series with the top team winning entry into the qualifying stage of the CONCACAF Champions League 2008-09. This will be the format for at least the first three seasons. It may expand if further Canadian teams join the MLS or USL.
[edit] Trophy
The winners of the Canadian Championship will be awarded the Voyageurs Cup,[6] a trophy traditionally handed to the Canadian USL First Division side with the best regular season record against other Canadian USL-1 teams.
The cup, donated to the CSA by The Voyageurs group, will be awarded to the winners of the Canadian Championship. The terms of the agreement will be reviewed in 2010.[7]
